Reviving this as this is important. I added this on being htat my rental was broken into and my Tefillin and Sheitlach plus a duffel bag full of clothing were stolen. I opted into the premium car rental after the police report, but before I payed (dropped off) for the vehicle.

AMex Premium covers up to $10,000 in personal property theft in this plan. Does anyone have any experience with this? PLease advice if you have had to deal with this.This is like $8,000 loss with out exaggeration.

It needs to be active before the rental starts, though the hold doesn't need to be on the card from my understanding.
It once happened that I prepaid a rental, on an amex, and when I rented, they did put the hold on, but being that their system is programmed that when there's a hold (for the duration of the rental) followed by a charge from the rental company, they charge the $20-$25 for the premium, but in my case being that there was no charge at the end, since it was prepaid, I didn't pay that fee.
I did call them at the time, and they said as long as it's paid on the card, with it active, it'll be covered.
Though this was a good couple years ago, so things may have changed.

Something interesting happened to me today. I rented a car from Sixt and used my Platinum which automatically triggers the premium rental car protection. I had an issue where they overcharged me and needed to refund a portion of the rental. The refund posted on the 6th and on the 7th I see a refund of $24.95 for the rental car protection.
I suspect that the Sixt refund triggered the Amex refund because it thought that the rental may have been cancelled.
