Anyone know if this laptop is a good deal?
« on: October 17, 2010, 01:34:14 AM »
I've been looking for a laptop to use for basic stuff (college work, web surfing, etc.) But i have an old one now so i'm in no rush to buy one. Tonight i found this laptop but i'm not such a computer whiz, so can someone please tell me if this is a good deal?

It's only available for Amex cardholders

System components:
Intel Core i3-370M Processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3, 1066MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64
14.0" HD Vibrant View, Midnight Black Glossy
Integrated Mobile Intel 5 Series GFX Chipsets
4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
UltraNav without fingerprint reader
500 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer
6 cell 2.2Ah Li-Ion Battery
Country Pack North America with Line cord & 65W AC adapter
ThinkPad bgn Wireless
Norton Internet Security 2011 - 36 months

Total would come out to $477

Should i keep waiting for a better deal? or is this a good price?

Thanks in advance

here's the link where i found it

looks like a pretty good deal to me IMO. However it is a 14' screen which i personally am not a fan of. I prefer a larger screen. Hopefully someone else will chime in and give a better opinion.

I saw this earlier tonight, it looks like a good deal. It will definitely be good for what you're looking.

You might want to consider some of the upgrades that are available like the built-in webcam ($28) or the 9-cell extended battery ($48).

One other think to keep in mind (you might not care about this at all) is that the Thinkpads are generally designed for business users, so they're not that stylish, but they are build very well.

What does GHZ mean? (is 2.4 GHz good?)

Also, how many hours of battery will i get from the 6 cell?

Thanks for your input but i like the 14" for two reasons 1) its easier to carry around (when i travel, or take it to school etc) 2)I assume that the battery will last longer with a smaller screen

Eh, i dont really care about style, just that it's gonna last. I once had a stylish acer that never ceased to give me problems

What does GHZ mean? (is 2.4 GHz good?)
It's a measure of computer speed. But since there are other factors (like cache and instruction sets, technical lingo you don't need to understand), it's not the only factor in a processor's performance. It's like saying horsepower isn't the only factor in a car's ability to speed, there are other factors like aerodynamics/drag and weight/mass etc.). This processor will be fast enough for your needs.
Also, how many hours of battery will i get from the 6 cell?

Real life performance (say you're viewing a DVD) difference between a 6 cell and 9 cell won't be more than an hour IMHO. You will get the best performance out of your battery if you dim the screen, turn off wifi/bluetooth when you aren't using it, change the power settings (in control panel) to a setting that conserves energy (i.e. not performance), don't use the optical drive and are doing things that don't require much processing power (your usage pattern shouldn't effect this much). With a 6 cell and dimmed screen I'd say you can definitely get at least 3 hours of ms word, probably even an hour more. I'm writing this on a 5 year old Dell with a 9 cell, I get 4+ hours of web browsing. My processor isn't as energy efficient, but my screen is a 21.1". IIRC, HP rates the 9 cell at 7.2 hours, you'll probably get at least 5+ in real-world performance.

Thanks for your input but i like the 14" for two reasons 1) its easier to carry around (when i travel, or take it to school etc) 2)I assume that the battery will last longer with a smaller screenEh, i dont really care about style, just that it's gonna last. You're welcome. If you're looking for a lightweight computer with a smaller screen, you might want to look at ultra-portables.

Lastly, if you want to get in on this deal, you might want to pull the trigger soon, it's an Amex daily deal and it won't last for long.

wow thank you for all that info!
One more question: Do you know what the return policy for this is?

You're welcome.

Seems like they have a 15% restocking fee, but if it's like new you can probably flip it on craigslist for cost price. Why wait, buy it!

Additionally, Amex return protection might reimburse you for the restocking fee.

From what I've read if it's defective and you try to work with tech support to fix the problem and get a case number they will waive the restock fee.
YMMV.  Use an AMEX to be safe.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

seems like an excellent laptop.

lenovo usually last long (bad luck you can have everywhere)

Acer has been a disgrace the last few years.

the difference between 6-9 cell batteries is not to be neglected, but if this proofs to be the problem, you order a new battery, just switching to power save mode, and turning off all superfluous activities, such as wifi, bluetooth, usb keys, etc go a long way to extend battery life.

Why is the Up to Intel® Core™ i5 560M processor better than the AMD Phenom II X3 Triple-Core P820? Also, is there a diff. between the Up to Intel® Core™2 Duo SU7300 processor  and the Intel® Core™ i5 560M processor? Lasty, are these computers better than a Dell?

AMDs are considered by some to be second rate. The architecture it totally different (e.g. the AMD you quoted is a triple-core, AFAIK Intel doesn't make triple cores.

Here's a comparison of the two Intel processors you mentioned, it's like comparing a MiniCooper to a Truck. The only advantage of the SU7300 is if your load is really light you'll get better battery effciency. If you're a medium to heavy user, I'd definitely go with the i5 560M.

I'd say Lenovo is better than Dell. Disclaimer: I'm writing on a Dell I've had that's five years old, but the Dell I bought to replace it only gave me heartache. I'd say Lenovo Thinkpads are better built than any current consumer Dells (Inspiron/XPS etc.).

If you specifically want this laptop, and you want it now, then it isn't worth waiting. If you're not very picky about specific models then I agree, it's worth it to wait.
