You will receive a reward of 6% on the first $6,000 of eligible purchases in an annual reward year at supermarkets located in the U.S. (superstores and warehouse clubs are not considered supermarkets); 3% on eligible purchases of gasoline at gas stations located in the U.S. (superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations); 3% on eligible purchases at select department stores located in the U.S. (the current list of select major department stores at which you can get a 3% reward is available at americanexpress.com/rewards-info ); and 1% on all other eligible purchases (and on supermarket shopping beyond $6,000).

The annual reward year referred to in the previous paragraph is 12 billing periods in a row beginning with the one that includes January 1st; if your billing cycle changes, the length of your annual reward year will also change.

Effective June 30, 2017, the "annual reward year" will be a calendar year:
You will earn a reward of 6% on the first $6,000 of eligible purchases in a calendar year at supermarkets located in the U.S. (superstores and warehouse clubs are not considered supermarkets); 3% on eligible purchases of gasoline at gasoline stations located in the U.S. (superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations); 3% on eligible purchases at select department stores located in the U.S. (the current list of select major department stores at which you can earn a 3% reward is available at americanexpress.com/rewards-info ); and 1% on all other eligible purchases (and on supermarket shopping beyond $6,000).

If i apply for this card this month and spend $6000 on groceries (6%) before dec 31

will it reset in January 2016 where I can spend another $6000?
I thought the year ended the same month you got the card, not the calendar year?
This is probably one of the most important questions to ascertain the real answer to and put in the wiki.

Per the T&C and my personal experience the year ends on the date the last statement is generated in December. If you get the card in December and the statement closes in January your spend is considered done the next year. Make sure to get the statement closing on or before December 31.
Fair warning - Any PMs sent in response to forum posts are fair game for ridicule in public.

Just to confirm what I read in the Wiki. The 6% for 6k starts fresh Jan 1st?

You didn't read correctly. It will start fresh the day after your Dec. statement closes.

Is "grocery" included in "supermarket" spend, or are they 2 different categories? Thanks.

Thanks. Just to clarify, I have the non-preferred version (couldn't find a thread for that card). Same answer, right?

In my last statement I realized I didn't get as much as I thought I should have gotten, after chatting it turned out the discrepancy was due to the fact that I was counting groceries when really you only get 6% for supermarkets...

yes.
When you're logged into your amex account.  click transactions.  Then click onto the individual transaction.  The last line in the information that comes up has the category.  supermarket and grocery is one category.

I actually don't.
I hadn't seen his post when I last posted.
I just checked my statements and my on line account.
On line supermarkets are listed as 'grocery', and on my statements I see they're added into the 'US supermarkets'.  But I had no small groceries used on that statement, so they may not get rewarded as supermarkets.
Spend somewhere small and local and check the next statement.(On the statement, the listed rewards earned were earned by the spending in the statement before.) (and get back to us- Achas already did.) Achas was it a small grocery that didn't get credit, or groceries bought in another type of store?

It was two stores that were coded as grocery online...

I got this with a $250 sign up bonus. I want to cancel, chat rep says that if I cancel any cash bonus will be forfeited. Should I be concerned?

It was already applied as a statement credit. Will they claw back?

Either swipe that amount or request a check for that amount. I don't have personal experience closing this card but it makes sense. Its not going into a mileage account.
