I read the terms and drew my own conclusions based on the fine print. What I am asking for is what you know based on experience.

Which of the following earns 3%?
  • Gas paid for at the pump
  • Gas paid for inside
  • Gas bought from a supermarket (1%, 3%, or 6%?)
  • Other items purchased inside at a gas station (snacks, soda, etc.)
  • Gift cards purchased inside at a gas station (One Vanilla, etc.)
Gas
IDK                           Anything sold in the gas station would be coded "gas station"
Supermarket
Generic  I disagree:  see my comment above
Generic     "                   "   But you only get 6% on a purchase up to $400 at a gas station: see T& C.

The t&c say you have to buy gasoline, I don't think snacks count.

Most 7-11's are coded on the Visa list as gas stations, and all purchases there come up as gas on Chase's 5x promos.

I agree the mcc code is relevant, but for amexs blue cash products that's not necessarily enough.

I can now share what I know from experience.
  • Gas paid for at the pump - earns 3%. Interestingly, when there was an AmEx promo for BP gas, the $5 credit also was included in the 3% (i.e., my cash back was reduced by $5 X 3% = 15¢). Similarly, when there was an ExxonMobil Speedpass promotion, my cash back was reduced by 3% of the Speedpass credit.
  • Gas paid for inside - I don't know yet.
  • Gas bought from a supermarket - earns only 1%. (I swiped my card at the pump to buy gas at King Soopers and earned only 1%. All non-gas purchases at this store earned 6%.)
  • Other items purchased inside at a gas station (snacks, soda, etc.) - I don't know yet.
  • Gift cards purchased inside at a gas station - earns only 1%. (I bought One Vanilla at a 7-11 that sells gas and earned only 1%.)

The MCC for MasterCard / Visa transactions may very well differ from the MCC for AmEx transactions. Two examples: When TigerDirect.com charges my Visa, the MCC is 5045; when they charge my AmEx it is 5969. When NewEgg.com charges my Visa, the MCC is 5732; when they charge my AmEx it is 5969.

I appreciate your experimenting and reporting back.
But the GC you bought was it for more than $400?
From the T & C: You get 5% on every day purchases including "purchases of $400 or less of gasoline at gas stations located in the U.S.". A  $500 card exceeds that.

Yes, the total transaction was over $1000. So we need someone to report what is earned if a One Vanilla card is loaded with $395.05 or less so that the total transaction will be $400 or less. Will they then award 3% or will they enforce the language and not award 3% because it is not "gasoline"?

I have bought numerous GC's at 7-11 with BC and BCP. The first 400 earned the higher rate of 5/6%.

CMIIW, but the T&C the T&C on the link above for the Old Blue Cash Card has the following:

For each dollar of eligible purchases in excess of $6,500 in that same reward year, you will receive a reward of 5% on Everyday Purchases and a reward of 1% on other purchases. If your billing cycle changes, the length of your reward year will also change.
Everyday Purchases are: eligible purchases made at supermarkets located in the U.S.(superstores and warehouse clubs are not considered supermarkets); eligible purchases of $400 or less of gasoline at gas stations located in the U.S. (superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations), and eligible purchases made at U.S. locations of select major drugstores. (The current list of select major drugstores is available at americanexpress.com/rewards-info.)

So I understand that to mean that after $6500 in spending in your year you earn 5% on supermarkets, gas (up to $400), AND select drugstores. Nothing is 3%.  Only 5% or 1%.

Which card gets 6% for that stuff?

So if purchase is higher than $400, then the first 400 gets 5%/3% and the last hundred and five gets 1% ?

Interesting, so it sounds like the terms aren't enforced (requiring the purchase to be of gasoline).

By me if 7-11 offers gas everything is coded as gas station. We have stand alone 7-11's that don't have gas. I stay away from them.

Does someone know for sure when the $6000/yr limit resets? Is it calendar year or anniversary? For example, I signed up for the card in June 2012 (when it was unlimited). Do I get $6K for 2014 and another $6K for 2015? Or $6K from June to June?
