Topic Wiki

find the price of the hotel AFTER TAX, mark it down..

next multiply the points required per night x these rates..

SPG: $0.018
Hyatt: $0.015
Hilton: $0.005

If the numbers are close to even than it may be more worth it to  book with a specific CC that gives X times the points at hotels.

Thinking of redeeming for hotel stay for first time.
Planning on going to Niagara for 2 nights in the summer, there are no Hyatts in the area and on SPG you can only use points for the lowest class of rooms, is there a way to get a better room either with points or as an upgrade to a points reservation? Or perhaps is there another way to get a nice room in another chain (maybe open a marriot card and use the free nights or something else)?
Try emailing the hotel manager. Lots of times they will offer you something to guarantee a suite.

If you do stay at a SPG there, might be worth waiting as they are going down in category and can save you points..

Those are the ones on the American side, I would rather stay at the Canadian ones...

What's the best thing to tell them? A sob story about a ruined honeymoon or will a simple "Can you please help me with this?" will do?

I think that's a mistake. They are on the Canadian side

Just email them saying how much you want to stay in a suite and if there is a way to guarantee a suite for your stay.

Just checked. Seems to be both in NY and not on Canada side.

So emailing a manager should work even in a place like Niagara in the height of summer?

IMO,always worth a shot. You can always mention status you may have in addition to "i have many friends who stayed there and loved it."

It always pays to send the email.
Either the manager will be in a good mood, or there was a last minute cancelation.
Or, they're completely booked.
Doesn't cost to try it.
Always use an Amex, you'll thank me one day.

There's a Sheraton and Four points on the Canadian side also.
I think the Marriott (Fallsview, not Gateway) is the nicest hotel in the area. Signing up for the Marriott CC will cover you pointswise but that hotel tends to be full over the summer making it hard to get a complimentary upgrade. Though it never hurts to ask.

No one said there isn't, but the ones being downgraded are on the NY side.

Not the nicest hotel in the world. The rooms are very dated. But I believe that's your best option. There's a fairmont downtown which looks nice
