Israeli Phone Jack To Ethernet
« on: October 25, 2010, 09:42:05 AM »
Is it possible to somehow plug an Ethernet cable to an Israeli phone jack and use the connection for another room?

How would you connect an Ethernet cable to a phone jack, whether Israeli, American or Chinese?

Perhaps you can explain what your trying to accomplish.

with an adapter.

Trying to connect a wireless router on a different floor to the modem. Instead of a wire running through the house I wanted to use the phone jack.

IFAIK there are more wires in an Ethernet cable then in the phone wire, so it wouldn't work.

Anyone else? Paging AsherO.

I'm no electrical engineer, but based on this info I'd say it will work (but may have issues) so long as the following conditions are met:

  • The Cat 3 (telephone wires) have 4 UTPs (Untwisted, Shielded Pairs) of copper wire (this can be circumvented if you are able to re-crimp your Ethernet cables to match the necessary pins with the available copper, so long as you have 2 UTPs).
  • There's no telephony equipment running on the wires at the same time (and not connected to a telephone switching station (e.g. Verizon).
  • You're using the telephone wires to connect no more than two networked points (e.g. one computer and one router, or one hub and one router).
  • Your two networked points are not too far from each-other (anything more than 100 feet and you might experience packet loss).

Disclaimer repeated: I have no formal networking education or experience. Use my advise at your own risk :)

Anyone else? Paging AsherO.

You can get a wireless repeater if you have an wireless router. They a have some RJ-11 to RJ-45 converters but I don think they work in Israel

It's an adapter, not a converter. So long as my conditions (see above) are followed, I can't see why it wouldn't work.

That happens to be true with any ethernet connection, although personally I've never experience it

Agreed. But I think the range for telephone is greater than the range for Ethernet.

Good point, I didn't realize the OP was asking specifically about Israeli phone jacks. If the Israeli jacks are only one UTP, then this has no chance of working.
