A friend of mine who works at the Comunity Council told me he was asked by a clerk at the benefits office why there are so many single moms in Williamsburg...

Yes there are definitely benefits to bing legally married.
If you file taxes, being married can make a big difference. Also if you or (your wife)get health insurance from your job you may need to prove that you are married to have your wife covered by your plan.
Someone who is saying they rather stay single for the benefits in order to be a "single mom" is prob not reporting much on taxes and is prob getting on Medicaid

I think it protects both the wife and kids.  If he dies c"v or they divorce, having been married obligates him to the family.  He can't just legally walk away. Community property even if the house is only in his name. (which I think is not right, but people do it.)

Back on topic:
Anyone have experience with the Monsey clerks? North Jersey? Wait times; required documentation; license vs actual "ceremony"?

After much research I ended up going to downtown Brooklyn on jorelemon st.
Theres no parking so i went to a garage around the block.
They open at 8:30 so i went at 845 and there was noone on line, everyone was filling out the paperwork Which I had done online first. By the time i was done the line was almost out the door. All in all I was back in my car in the garage 22 min after dropping it off.

The NYS marriage license instructions says it must be signed by a rabbi registered with the city. Anyone ever try having a random Rov sign, would it work?

My NY license was signed by a NJ rabbi.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Skip queens
I did mine in queens, registered online beforehand, therefore was allowed to skip the entire line, was in and out in less than 10 minutes

A little of topic; if rabbi doesnt require legal marriage license, is their a benefit in getting legally married?
Right now my wife has a lot more benefits bec shes a "single mom"
This is actually standard operating procedure in chasidishe /heimish circles sounds like you'd fit right in.
