Starwood cash and points
« on: February 11, 2014, 07:27:42 PM »
Hi all.

Does anyone know if the cash paid for a cash-and-points reservation with starwood is 'eligible spend' to get the bonus SPG points?
(The SPG Amex gives 2 points for starwood spend - I'm pretty sure that'll be credited, but will the 2 points/dollar SPG points from SPG itself be credited?)

Couldn't find the answer by searching the forums.

Yes, I believe that all spending done at an SPG location with your Starwood card, even wifi fees, spa fees, etc...
will be credited as double/triple points based on your spg status of Gold or Platinum. (That elite status is not on your card, it's on your spg.com account...)

If I'm not mistaken ALL spg expenses qualify, even the W mattresses purchases that Dan periodically posts..

yes, i meant all Starwood purchases.. (Westin, "W", Sheraton, etc..)
The mattress benefit is that perhaps the purchase is protected by the Amex part of the "Starwood Amex".

Thanks everyone!

This makes cash and points bookings more attractive, as it offsets the point cost - effectively more cents per point.

Yes, and it permits more rooms per year that one may not normally be able to afford! Loving the gold+ perks. 4:00 check-out, free wifi options, etc..

It seems that Cash+Points rates are NOT counted for extra starpoints.
I just finished a 4-night stay, and it posted as '0 points' in my activity.
I went to the page to request credit, and found this :

Quote
Ineligible Rates
The Starwood Preferred Guest program allows members to earn Starpoints on most room rates. Ineligible room rates include, but are not limited to:
Wholesaler rates
Tour Operator rates
Any Rate where the booking was made through a third-party channel such as but not limited to: expedia.com, orbitz.com, priceline.com, hotels.com, booking.com, lastminute.com, ratestogo.com, wotif.com, etc.
Stays longer than 90 days/Permanent Guests
Free Night Awards
Cash & Points Awards
TAED rates (Travel Agent and Airline employee discount rates are still eligible)
Room rate billed to a Master Account
Airline Crew room rates
Employee rates

So it looks like you don't get the points on the cash portion after all.  :(

That's not good -- I also thought it counted.
Massage, spa spending at the hotel and an extra gym fee IIRC, does get the triple points..
You can prob get the same amount of points for free (2,000) with 2 months of using the SPG card on AP
