I'm reading that Reebok skates are not as good as CCM or Bauer. Any truth to this?
probably, the one thing i would not skimp on is skates. Make sure you get skates that are comfortable and really fit you well even if that means spending a little more.

Good advice. thanks

That makes me think about how the different equipment should feel when I try it on in the store [BEFORE its broken in].
Do skates even "break in"?
What about some of the other stuff?

I've read that you can "bake" the skates to break them in

true but they still take some real breaking in. Most hockey stores (including hockey monkey) will bake them for you in store.

naa you dont need to bake them, after 2-3 times using them they are fine, it basically the same as a nice pair dress shoes

I also read that baking can mess with the seals and materials in the skate, boot, etc.

If breaking-in manually after 3 runs does the same job, maybe I'll forgo the baking.
Comments?

IMO, I'd rather a new pair of cheaper skates then a used pair of more expensive skates.

You can find on hockeymonkey a nice pair of Bauers for roughly $50-$90 that could do the job.

I wouldn't spend over $100 on skates till you try it out and our committed to playing for a while, as a beginner you won't be able to tell the difference.

I bought skates, cup, gloves and socks new, everything else I bought used and it wasn't to bad.

Shoulder pads and pants don't touch your skin, so no real reason to buy new.
