I have been working on my wife for a few years, she is slowly but surely seeing the light. (This winter sure is helping my cause!)

Where do you want move to?

I agree they're important, but look at all the cons?

Besides, does one NEED so many restaurants to be able to be happy? I'd submit the happiness one would get from living OUTSIDE of NY would far outweigh the happiness you'd lose by not having 101 restaurants to choose from.

Listen, I would love to move from ny. The 2 things that are keeping me here are 1 Work 2 Family(namely my wife) Dont need 57 schools , but a choice of more than 2 or 3 is nice. As well as all the kosher conveniences.

I've got my choice of pizza shops, a great bagel shop, and several mediocre fleishig places.
But that's besides the point, my wife is an insane cook and eating out more wouldn't make me happier, just fatter and poorer.

Not that it's not fun to travel and eat out, but I'm even happier eating a home-cooked meal (last night we came back and Mimi whipped up Beef Bourguignon with kliskies and Chocolate cookies stuffed with Oreos and Peanut Butter).

Yes, only 3 schools to choose from.  A tragedy.

Trying to convince her that florida, is close enough that whenever she wants to come in and visit her family, she is just 7500 avios away. I also have a possible job opportunity there.

Hmm, I have on pizza shop, one chinese,  a couple of bagel places, a deli, and a couple of israeli places. No thurs night cholent. Latest you can get food anywhere is 10.
2 schools to choose from, but one is Coed. So one school to choose from.

And my rent is not even so much higher than it would be in Crown Heights.

At least my commute is shorter (I drive in about 20 mins).

I heard there are some politics going on between the Maui and Kauai Rebbes, and the Kauai chasidim in Maui opened their own shtibel. The whole beach is full of pashkevill'en.
Alol. Reminds me of this.
If you don't care why would you comment?

Are BOS summers as hot/humid as NYC?
I liked BOS. Seemed like a very enjoyable city.
Still have that high east coast cost of living though.

Glad for you, that your wife likes to cook;). And i am also glad to hear that you are happy were you are. Thank g-d i am happy were i am. That being said i would still be open to moving somewhere else. It would definitely have to be warm! But minimizing the fact that i have a lot of schools to choose from, and have lots of places to eat, and have lots of family here, does not make living elsewhere better. Yes, living in CLE may have its benefits, and if i grew up there (or lived there) I am sure i could be happy. With the cost of living, and housing, etc.. there are maalos. But there are also chesroynes(pardon my attempted spelling)

Funny. I hate New York so much that the first thing I told my parents when they asked me what I'm looking for in a wife is that she is not from Brooklyn. Well, somehow my wife came from Brooklyn (but she hates New York more than I do). And then when I got offered a job that is not matchable anywhere else, well, guess where I live now?! G-d has such a good sense of humor

Basically a girl that won't feel comfortable working in an office with a lot of Goyim.

I think my biggest thing is just living in a generally calm and peaceful place.
I def don't need kosher restaurants. Though I do appreciate them when they're around. The truth is because of costs I don't eat out too much as it is.  Food at home tends to be healthier and tastier. :)

A lot of New Yorkers have recently moved to the midwest and so far I haven't met one that's ready to move back to NY.
Yes it's an adjustment and there are things you 'lose out' on but the pros outweigh the cons for most people.

agreed but there are loads of jobs in speech and other therapies in ny. Do they exist oot?
I wouldn't mind moving oot and neither would my wife. Jobs are an issue for me and my wife needs some family around..
Edit, shouldn't all this be in the pro and cons thread ;).

The title of this tread is "Making a community in Hawaii".
MAKING being the operative word here.

The last 18 hours has seen posts focused primarily on what infrastructure exists and on what it lacks.
I thought the plan was to go and MAKE it ourselves? We open our own groceries; our own schools; create our own jobs.
Everyone knows that all the above exists in places like NY, NJ and OH. The goal is to create it for ourselves in sunny, tropical Hawaii.

I feel like people are losing sight of that and focusing on what it lacks rather than what we can build.
