What is the "commute" time from HI? IOW, where would you have to live to be accessible to a direct flight to the mainland? How close could you get? Which airport? Is it a busy airport or more smallish? What is the flight time to LAX (I am assuming that LAX would become your connecting city for all travel stateside, but correct me if I am wrong.)

Conversely, how close to Australia and Asia are you from HI?

You can get from Maui (OGG) or Kauai (LIH) to many major airports in the US.  And it's much closer to Asia and Australia.
Wouldn't want to live in HNL.

Going to be the island mashpiah?

All this talk (Pros and Cons) is useless. The Gemarah already says " חן המקום על יושביה"

Just read through this read.

Not sure that I'd be up to living out there,  but it'll definitely be a huge convenience for me when I visit the area,  so I'm all for it  ;)

Count me in. The only main issue I see right now is schooling.  I'm not into the whole homeschooling thing.

+1
most warm weather communities have it all set up, aside for the schooling.
Therefore, that's a big reason why people migrate to much less appealing areas. They end up either:
1) paying a lot of money for (LA housing/rent and schooling cost$)
2) disliking the weather (NYC, too cold; MIA, too hot, etc...)
3) having a long commute to work, not owning a lot of land, etc...

This can be solved in HI if there are 10 male and 10 female quality teachers (or 10 teaching couples - of grades K - 9 ready to move)
By 10th grade, we'd have to save up enough money to pay to fly them to Mesivtas/high schools

What kind of hashkafah would these teachers impart into the talmidim? I guess it's a race to see which chug will establish the first school in HI!

Of course we know it's a DD community!
Exactly because it's a DD community is how we know that the:
food,
transportation,
clothing,
insurance,
and housing are all 'covered'!

Just the tuition for 10th grade and up will need to be charged on CC's.
The 20 HI island teachers will be paid in DD benefits.
Out teen kids will fly to Yeshiva and back for free -- with points/miles.
So, the tuition is the area where we'll need to save up for a few years....  :)

I am so down. Although I can't be the resident rav or mashgiach. Maybe the cook ...
Why do I feel like we've all had this convo before? ;)
