What would you say if you were in England?
I'm not in England, so I don't worry about it.

Last night at 11:30 I walk out of my house and I see my neighbor (who's a prominent Rabbi) shoveling our steps (he brought his own shovels). I asked him what he was doing, and he responded "don't wasn't it to ice over tomorrow morning"
to be quite honest, im not quite sure what to make of that...

I got stuck in the NY snow trying to get onto the highway. Random guy in a yarmulka pulls over in his SUV and spends 30minutes trying to help me get out. In the end he physically pushes my car with me until I get out. All this in the freezing rain.
Meanwhile as I struggle to get my car back into my driveway, all my non-Jewish neighbors just watch. I'm not saying there are no nice gentiles out there.

I get that this forum is predominantly read by Jews, but it's still public. I don't see the benefit of a thread like this in its current form.

I got stuck in a parking spot  on Tuesday and after 20 min of trying a frum man stopped and helped me for 20 min till I was out.
My portable shovel snapped and I was using a hammer to chip away at a mound of ice.
I now have prepared myself for the future by keeping 2 pieces of carpet in my car, for traction.
Also after doing some research for a portable, durable and versatile shovel, I purchased this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00169V99K

has anyone else ever heard of keeping kitty litter in the car to help with traction? (saw it in an allstate commercial)

I've never done it. But a few weeks ago a friend of mind mentioned it. He said he used it and it works.

Yup. I've heard of that many times. Haven't tried it out myself yet though I can see why it would help.

I think it would work with a bag of sand or salt too. Its the weight of the litter that helps with traction.

I kept 2 fifty pound buckets of salt in my trunk this winter, it did the trick for me.

Speaking of Silberger's, I am reminded of a letter I once wrote to a local publication with a "Mi Ke'amcha Yisroel story" that pertains to that store. I quote here the relevant segment:
Quote
It was a few weeks before my Chasuna, and I went into The Suit Place in Brooklyn (formally known as The Right Place) to purchase a suit. Being that I was to wear this suit by my Chasuna, I wanted a solid black suit, without any design or pinstripe.

R’ Elozer Meyer, the owner of The Right Place, brought me over to the rack with my size suits and pulled off a few for me to try. After trying on all the solid black suits in stock, I found one that fit well, but I was turned off by the style of the collar. (The collar was very thin and long, whereas I desired a more traditional style.)

I went over to Rabbi Meyer and told him that I liked that suit, but asked him if he had it with a standard collar. He thought for minute and said that it was all he had. He then asked me to wait a minute, and he pulled out his cell phone.

Rabbi Meyer dialed a number, and when the person at the other end answered, he asked, “do you have brand X, style XXXX, size XX?” He listened for a minute then said, “Great! Could you please put it aside? I’m sending someone over to you who wants it”, and he hung up.

Turning to me, “Go to Silberger’s,” he said, referring to a competing suit store a few blocks away, “they have the exact suit you want and they put it aside for you.”
