 You should call CO right now to check the European partners. It is already ten months... The only issue might be if they leave from JFK, in which case you could not change to a direct flight fee free. You might check if they have CO availability to the stopover country as that would leave from Newark as well.

CO considers JFK & EWR the same city so there wont be any change fee
