 You should call CO right now to check the European partners. It is already ten months... The only issue might be if they leave from JFK, in which case you could not change to a direct flight fee free. You might check if they have CO availability to the stopover country as that would leave from Newark as well.

Ouch. Is that true that JFK to EWR would be considered a change of city? Is that one of those YMMV or is that etched in stone?

CO considers JFK & EWR the same city so there wont be any change fee
