Is there a purpose to checking in online if you have bags to check?

I'm flying on the US Airways deal to TLV and credited the flight to AA.
I have the AAdvatage Citi Executive MasterCard that (i'm pretty sure) would get me priority boarding on AA and i figure US AIR too.
However, when i try to check in online, there is a charge for premier boarding (or something similar). I figure that when i check in at PHL, i can try to get them to give it to me then.
Hence the question: Is there any gain to checking in online if you have suitcases to check?

I realize i may have more than one wrong assumption.  :)

It's always better to check in online before, so you know they are not giving away your seat.
