I would transfer them to ANA only if there's a flight you're looking to book.
ANA miles have more restrictive rules and you can only travel on 4 airlines without a fuel surcharge.
Although deals on those 4 airlines can be excellent, but they can always add a fuel surcharge at any time if they feel like it..

Plus ANA miles have a hard expiration date while CO miles don't.

So if im not planning on flying any time in the near future.. (well forsure within the next 3 yrs) (thats how long ANA keeps miles for) than i shouldnt save them on ANA- i should opt for continental EVEN THOUGH i need more CO points for a flight than i would need for ANA.. am i understanding correctly?

With Continental you'll have some 35 partners to choose from, with ANA you'll just have 4 unless you want to pay $$$$.

So if you know there's CO/UA/US/VS availability then it makes sense, but otherwise the safe bet would be CO.
Of course if you're a gambler than go with ANA!

Yes.
But you can't transfer points unless you have one of the green, gold, or plat charge cards.

So it seems like I don't really gain by openning a blue without a fee.
If I open a blue to 'save' my MR points and close my gold so don't pay annual fee, will I need to reopen a gold/green/plat to transfer to an airline?

how do U know this? another potential problem is CO doesnt have any expiration periods but UA does , so when they become 1 program it will be ? nothing has been released yet on what the Mileage program T&Cs will be yet, so it can the every 18 months that UA has at present to keep your Miles alive or COs way

heck who knows if CO will get E+ or will UA go to all 2 cabin aircarft when at present they have a 3 cabin config on their Intl planes among hundreds if not thousands of items still not yet made known
