Retaining Gift Cards/VRs
« on: February 21, 2014, 10:27:44 AM »
How long should one hold on to GCs? I have an entire draw full of them and was thinking of dumping them. But I had paid my car insurance with a GC (5%, better than 2% using barclay) and then my policy changed and I was due a refund. Since I didn't receive a check, I called and was told they refunded the money to my "CC" ending in ... So I had to search my drawer. After 20 minutes I found the Card. So if you use if for purchases/payments it makes sense to hold onto them for longer. Anyone with similar experiences?
How about if use use them for MO or BB. Once the money is liquidated, is there any reason to hold onto them? How about AP?

If you told them that card was closed, they can probably send you a check.

IMHO, if you have the space to hold onto them, keep them. You never know.

I think with AP, the recipient of the fund can see a refund link next to the transaction for a very long time after it occurred. If they (or the person who hacked their account) clicks it, the money will be refunded to the original card. It would be a shame to no longer have the card or any record of the account number.

If I had lost or tossed the card, I definitely would have done that. But as I was pretty sure I still had it, I thought that better than have to worry about them giving me a hard time or telling me it would take 30 days for a check

I usually liquidate them to bb in wm and will usually throw it out as soon as I've confirmed the money in my bb account. Same with vr
