In general, why would anyone expect a hotel to honor a substantial price mistake, considering that, unlike with airlines, the customer has no recourse?

There is some recourse in false advertising laws. But I would think they would like to garner goodwill, and would rather have good publicity than bad.
Also a hotel reseller site that cancels price 'mistake' deals would have a hard time with repeat business - how do I know it's a price mistake or a sale? Why would I use that site again?
Besides - in this case - $99/night rooms is not a 'clear mistake' - a $1 room would definitely be, but a lot of hotels have sales, and even a nice hotel at $99/night can be often had when there's a promo, or a slow period.

Ok, so the story gets weirder.
I emailed them back, and accepted the 209 rate before the date they stipulated.
A day later got a confirmation email about change to the booking at the new rate (209/night + tax), same original 1 bedroom suite.
Now (3 days later!) I get a cancellation email out of the blue!
Not cool.
Can't find any phone number for booking.com - in the cancellation they refer to the hotel phone number.
Emailed them back to see what's up with cancelling with a rate that they offered me explicitly, but I don't have high hopes for booking.com customer service.

I'm in negotiations with them for a better deal than the regular room for $199, including resort fee, that they offered me.

I actually had a "good" experience with them once. They booked me into a "5" person suite in TLV, and mistakenly overbooked. I had to scream at them for an hour, but eventually they booked us into 3 double rooms at a going rate of $250X3. Original booking was $100
