IMO very very bad news. If UA and AA follow suit- which will almost certainly happen at some point- the game is over. At least for international premium redemptions.

If US carriers move in that direction, then ppl will start focusing more on international carriers award charts, and their mileage earning rates.

In the near-term, this should be a boon for AS, but DL may be on their way to breaking up that relationship as well.

I am actually happy with this announcement because I'm not a Delta flyer, and the less miles there is in the pool the better it is. As long as redemptions are becoming better, I'm all for it. Not sure what the alarm is.....

Do you have miles in any other programs?
And this is just the next step towards redemptions also being revenue based (similar to SW, etc)
If you only fly domestic economy, then that may also be good for you. Otherwise, it likely won't be.

I'm doing it anyway. Even without going revenue based AS and AA are the only US carriers left with a reasonable chart. And AS is expected to devalue as well.
You gotta be crazy accumulating UA miles instead of say SQ.

But to a large extent, that depends on the class of service.
If I could take 100% UA or 75% SQ, I may still choose UA.
(Disclaimer: I don't actually fly anywhere, so it's a moot point for me.)

They've always been terrible. I don't see five tiers as opposed to three making that assessment any different.

When 97% of TLV flights in J are in the 5th tier for say, 400,000 miles each way, will you change your tune?

That has nothing to do with five tiers. They've always been stingy about releasing at low levels, and USA-TLV in J is already 350K round trip. At that price, it doesn't matter. I won't be redeeming at 350K or 900K. So let them make the 5th tier 1MM each way. Makes little difference to me, and I'd bet 97% of travelers.

Say Virgin to Australia in J goes to 300K?

At this point we know nothing, but going to 5 isn't going to help things. Like a said, a bad program becoming really bad.

Say they breach the hallowed line in the sand that is 25K round trip domestic?

Say they limit low level awards to redemptions 6+ months out?

Say they only allow one person to redeem at level one and any other travelers at one level above?

All conjecture.

Bottom line is with what we know now, nothing changes for people who earn their miles the "easy" way.
