Cold war 2014
« on: March 18, 2014, 01:25:44 PM »
Why does the USA care if Russia annexes a part of Ukraine? Most of the people who live in Crimea wanna be russian and speak russian. I dont see the big deal. Its not like they used tanks to conquer an innocent neighbor.

Is there a thread on this?

As far as USA is concerned, it's a matter of standing up to the bully.
If you don't care why would you comment?

No One is bullying anyone. Ukraine is a highly dysfunctional country, most of the residents of crimea want to join Russia they have even voted on a referendum. They have been part of Russia before...

Should a strong Russia bother us? Would they use power to influence the middle east against the Us's interests?

Your question makes me wonder if you are joking or just extremely naive.

Ukraine is (rightfully) an independent country with an independent government. Crimea belongs to Ukraine. Putin committed a crime by invading an independent country unprovoked, and now seizing the land.

Did you know that a majority of California is Hispanic? What if Mexico invaded California because the Hispanics that live there wanted to be part of Mexico?

What if two guests staying in your house decided that they want me to be the landlord and not you? Can I throw you out of your house and take it over?

Putin committed a war crime by seizing the land just like Saddam Hussein did when he invaded Kuwait. The U.S. obliterated the entire Iraqi army when that happened, and they would do the same to Russia now if not for the threat of nuclear war.

Nevertheless, there is a very effective way of forcing Russia out. The U.S. can destroy the Ruble and Russia's economic backbone by not accepting the Ruble. It would cause mayhem in Russia and force Putin to pull out. The problem is that Obama is a coward. Putin knows it and the world knows it, and it makes me sick that the whole world is now laughing at us.

How would that work? Russia has many natural resources and supplies primarily Europe and Asia, so the US can't cut them off so quickly. Throwing Russian banks out of the global banking system has the risk of a new Euro denominated global system rising which would be the end of America, or at least the end of a socialist America.

I actually don't think Obama is being a coward at all, a coward would have completely ignored Russia. The real mistake was letting Putin slowly become a dictator.

Many Americans have massive capital investments in the Ukraine.

The US guaranteed Ukraine's security when they gave up their nukes and America is now losing all it's credibility. That can have catastrophic results in places like Korea.

The scenario you put forward is a nice theory but would never happen. Russia is simply not trustworthy, and when push comes to shove, even their Chinese "friends" wouldn't place any value on a Russian-backed currency.

If you search around, you will see that Russia can't afford to stop exporting oil to Europe, as it accounts for 50% of it's entire budget revenue. If Putin tried to "punish" Europe this way, he would be shooting himself in the face.

Don't take my word for it. Top financial experts believe that this would force Russia out. The thing is, Putin knows that Obama has no balls. Say what you wish, but this would never happen under Ronald Reagan.

People probably asked the same when Germany annexed Austria in 1938. There was a referendum, with over 99% voting for annexation. Most countries didn't care at the time...

I still don't understand what you meant when you said the US should 'stop accepting the Ruble'?

Many countries in Europe are dependent on Russian oil. Even if they managed to ship from the Middle East instead, Russia will always find someone to buy oil.
