Blue for business, you need to apply separate (cannot downgrade)

This will "hold" your MR rewards points (with limited redemption options) until you open a new card in a year or more which gives you a new bonus and then they will still be in your MR account.
Of course until you open that new card these points are kind of "frozen" since you cannot transfer them to an airline.

If you think you are going to use them during the next year on an airline the best suggestion would be to downgrade to green ($95 AF) and then you will be able to use them.

you can of course just transfer them to an Airline FF account but then you lose flexibility

You are able to apply, but will not get bonus.
Need to be completely off Amex Business card.

Not sure if you can transfer points to a personal Amex MR account and then apply in a year.
That would not be a downgrade though you would need to apply separately.
Anyone know ?

My cousin was just asking me the same Q. He says his Green card has no AF (can that be true?) and he wanted to apply for a personal Gold, get the bonus, and then close the card before the AF. It seems from above that his Green will hold the points for him? Does that make sense?

yes that sounds different, should be Green Membership rewards card, or something like that, you can check for the card online
