AA sent wrong itinerary on avios ticket- help

I booked my friend a round trip ticket with avios.  BA had him booked for 550 flight and when AA sent him itinerary it had him booked for 720 flight.  Of course he got there and they said that that tickt had been refunded (though never recieved email).  British refused to give points back and they also automatically cancelled the return flight home so I am out both ways.  I wrote complain to but I was wondering if there is something more to do.  Its outrageous to me that 1) they could cancel my return flight without refunding miles 2) that American could send out the wrong itinerary to my friend and 3) that the agents wouldnt try to contact BA and set things right or try and ask to hold plane for 5 minutes. Literally with 5 more minutes things could have been ok because they checked and saw my friend was on 550 and would have put him on 720 (took me an hour to get through and explain situation to BA).  Any advice or comfort appreciated.
