Help with noise in basement
« on: March 05, 2014, 11:05:01 PM »
We live in a basement and the people upstairs from us seem to have a issue with keeping quiet in sleeping time it is really crazy the amount of noise they make.
We spoke to them a couple of times and it didn't help at all.
So we are trying to figure out a solution that we will not hear them.
We tried normal ear plugs and they didn't help since the noise is too loud I was thinking about a noise machine but I don't think its gonna help.
I wanted to know if anyone has suggestions about what we can do about this?
Thanks in advance

If the upstairs are renters complain to landlord nobody should need earplugs in their own house

Is it a old house? Some houses are old and you just hear everything whats going on upstairs, your upstairs neighbor might just talk on the phone or walk around and you think that he is screaming and banging.
You can say what you think when you think what you say.

Doubt it. He may just look for a different apartment.

You'd be surprised how many stories I heard of Rabbanim getting very tough with landlords for not treating tenants properly, even for small infractions. Some Rabbanim are very pro renters.

I just want to point out that often normal every day living can unintentionally make a lot of noise in the basement. I lived in a basement for a few years and had a lot of noise and I have no complaints against the guy because I realize that little things like moving around chairs and vacuuming are normal usage and can sound very loud downstairs when he has no clue what it sounds like.

Now rollerskating indoors on the other hand....

My best eitza is that next time there is a lot of noise, ask him (non-confrontationally) to come downstairs and hear what it sounds like. It may be an eye (ear) opening experience for him.

+1
FME and from speaking to my friends, it seems like every basement has noise.
My landlord has a very active 5yo boy, and they told us straight out that they try quieting him and they feel bad, and if it ever bothers us we should just bang on the ceiling with a broom. The problem is that it's pretty constant and we're embarrassed to constantly complain. So we don't have anything against them; we'll either just bear it, or move soon to an upstairs apartment.
Of course, if your situation is where they're doing something abnormal, that's different.

In Lakewood it is easy enough to find a new place.  IMO, for the sake of shalom, deal with it, and not renew.  If you have already spoken with him, and nothing changed, it probably won't, no matter what.  The din may be with you, but IMO it is not worth it to pursue.
