Wow. I am really happy with the direction this thread is going, anyone with experience improving their soundproofing post construction please chime in. I myself have been doing tons of research to c what can be done without having to rip out and start over. Freddie I strongly advise you to do your due diligence and don't rely on your contractor in all likelihood he knows nothing about it it's a separate miktzoah from construction and they don't recognize that. Another website with reading up on is www.tmsoundproofing.com/  frum guy in monsey. I personally am about to attempt making some improvements will definitely report back with results but would definitely appreciate hearing other ppls experiences first.

Maybe this should be a living in basement/soundproofing master thread?

At least a year, probably closer to a year and a half.
That's long enough to realize it wont work  :(

Right. Although we really like the apartment itself and the neighborhood, we're seriously considering moving to a townhouse.

So now you can make noise over someone elses head. And the cycle of life continues.... :)

I live in an apt that has a shared door between my apt and the apt next door (due to fire code, I think). Any ideas on how to soundproof this doorway that will block out the noise?
I have no need for this door so it can be something that will block the door.

TIA

Maybe something that takes up less space...and a little cheaper ;)

I'm thinking of drilling some sort of sheetrock into the doorframe and sealing any cracks left over. I need advice if that would work and which sheetrock is recommended. I see there is something called soundboard. Anyone with experience?

Hmm, you sure that's a good idea? When ever a house is sold there is a fire inspection done. If you do this make sure the owner is aware that this may cause problems down the road.

It can always be unscrewed and taken down. Not a big deal.

Ty.

Does anyone have experience with this? I just want to make sure it would work before I try it, although theoretically it would then be just as good as a regular wall (but i might only be able to do one side of the door so it would only be one layer of sheetrock as opposed to a wall which has two layers).

There are halachic problems with blocking off a doorway (or window) entirely.

Halachic or Kabbalah?

There's a minhag not to brick over a door, window or even chimney. Closing with wood or sheetrock is ok.

it's enough to make a small hole, to let the shaidim thru.
What if it's a temporary closure?
We have to leave our mezuza up even though it's never been opened since we closed up the doorway.
