100%. I know the serial number of the phone that was attached to my account but I have no way of knowing the serial number of the phone that is currently in my possession because the thing won't turn on.
easy. tell him to plug it in or send it back. on the back of the iphone theres another number its easily traceable. you bring that phone into apple get the true number (of course get him to send back the phone with his name and address) and even offer to give him the money back when u receive the phone, tell him youll mail him a check. In the meantime go to the cops once hes been busted (as in you and apple see the numbers dont match) and charge his @$$ for stealing! :)
If you have any questions please search and then ask. PM me for detailed help.

The guy already supposedly returned the phone that he bought.

What exactly is jaywhy asking him to return?
Plug it in? The buyer  doesn't have the phone anymore as far as he (the buyer)  is concerned.

@jaywhy,  I'm not familiar with iPhones,  but there's got to be a way to identify the phone even if it doesn't turn on.

I thought teh buyer still has the phone. then take the phone to apple. they will be able to see the serial number.

question @jaywhy is there a sim tray? pop it open and look on the back of it. there should be ur serial number there

The buyer DOES have the original phone that jaywhy sent him,  but he claims that he doesn't.

The sim tray has the SN of the original phone that I sent him but he could have easily swapped sim trays.

@Saver, according to Apple, there is no way to identify the serial number of a phone that doesn't turn on. I find that very hard to believe, I plan on calling again and escalating the matter.

I bought it on my Amex in June but it was refurbished and Apple only covers 90 days for refurbs.

I doubt hes that smart to swap trays. But maybe hes THAT good.

There is another way, you need to open up the phone and behind the battery should have the number there as well...

Did you try bringing it back to apple and letting them have a test run at it. maybe it fell in water the day he got it. (apple can tell in a min if its water damaged.

Is having a seller account (pay monthly fee) a requirement to maintain Top Rated status?

Does the back of the phone have the IMEI number? I could get the serial based off the IMEI

It does not.
At this point, I plan on bringing the phone into the Apple store to see what they can do, just have to get over there...

Why do some people buy on Ebay and then don't pay immediately?

Why does Ebay let you buy without paying immediately?

A lot of new people to eBay do not understand that a sale is complete after clicking buy, as opposed to until after payment.

I actually called eBay and asked them to implement auto pay. When you bid, you need to give your payment info.
