The easiest disputes for a buyer to win are those made through paypal. If you do a bank deposit or another method of payment, the worst the buyer can do to you is leave negative feedback or report you to ebay (which i dont think is so effective)
The very fact your making the sale off ebay makes it almost impossible to dispute it either way.

If you're selling off eBay, neither of you have any recourse if the sale goes wrong. Make sure he's paying you with a payment method that is foolproof. Personally I wouldn't give a stranger off eBay my bank account number.

Why can't the buyer file a dispute with his CC?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Assuming he pays with his CC, hence my suggestion that:

If you're selling off eBay, neither of you have any recourse if the sale goes wrong. Make sure he's paying you with a payment method that is foolproof. Personally I wouldn't give a stranger off eBay my bank account number.

whats a legitimate reason why would a buyer want to do it off of ebay? so that you'll give it to him for cheaper since there are no fees?

Yes, especially if you (or the OP) are not selling it with a best offer option.

Other things to consider would be the feedback and account history of the person making the offer, their location, how many facebook friends they have, etc. etc.

If its off ebay, he cant leave negative feedback.

If he paid thru paypal than he could always dispute it with paypal ... I myself often sell off ebay - to save the fees for myself and the buyer. I have never had a dispute (yet)

But I would only ship to a confirmed address if its not thru ebay (thru ebay it always comes up as confirmed)

If you're selling off eBay, neither of you have any recourse if the sale goes wrong. Make sure he's paying you with a payment method that is foolproof. Personally I wouldn't give a stranger off eBay my bank account number.
Let him pay you WU (I have done this) I doubt the buyer would wanna to this, as its high risk for him
Why can't the buyer file a dispute with his CC?
Paypal payment disputes are hard to file ... paypal will fight it

I have a simlper suggestion

Its againt ebay policy but ...  ;)

Tell the buyer to buy on ebay, after he receives the item you could cancel the ebay transaction and you will get the ebay fees refunded, and then you could give him a $30 refund.

Don't you risk him reporting you to eBay that way?

Doubt it, as the buyer already risked the seller reporting him by offering to do it off ebay.

And most buyers couldnt care less if ebay doesnt get their fees

I'm suggesting the buyer could use that as leverage to blackmail you, e.g. if they want to return the item.

he is getting the item cheaper, why would he report you, i would be more worried that ebay will see the messages you corrosponded with and see you did a shtick with them.

+1, especially if an auction is cancelled, which they might look into.

Its all automated... I dont think its a red flag if the sale was canceled.

Deff keep the communication of this off ebay - tell him to email you regarding a discount ...

I'm suggesting the buyer could use that as leverage to blackmail you, e.g. if they want to return the item.
This is a valid point.

But as I could say from experience - I had only 3-5 returns for ebay sales I did this year ... I did over 1000 sales

Never have such messgaes thru ebay messaging. Ask the buyer to conact you at your email using "dot" and "at".

I've  done a few disputes over the years and I don't think Paypal fights for you. I actually had a guy beg me to withdraw the dipute as paypal charged him $10 (I did because the item did eventually arrive)

I had times when I received a fraudulent payment, and since it was to a confirmed address paypal took the loss and refunded me...

I dunno how much paypal protects the buyer, but they do have the dispute option like CC's and buyers could dispute payments... I hve had a disputes from a buyer and even though his claim (I dont think) was not legit, but the way its set up, paypal froze the payment, and I had to accept a return.

I am trying to sell something on ebay. Asking 230. A buyer contacted me offering 200. I guess I would do it if I could avoid the paypal fees. Is it "dangerous" for me to sell it outside of ebay using paypal? Can he dispute it easily?
