They may not know how to fly a plane, but I assure you someone knows how to press "transmit" on the radio, night or not.

You would have to know the right frequency.

To pick up and just start talking? I'm sure whatever frequency it was on, someone would have been listening, be it other planes, or the previous or future tower.

If they were too far away from the tower which was listening on that frequency, they might not be able to reach anyone without switching.

239 people can't break in and overcome the pilot?
239 people storming to the front of the plane can cause a huge imbalance in the weight.

Can anyone explain why the Malaysians refuse to release the cargo manifest?

There's no way the NSA doesn't have it, and if there would be anything of interest we would know already. People love their moment of fame.

Most likely there are business confidentiality concerns (or contractual issues stemming from those concerns).

Just in from Moscow: Snowden announced he knows exactly where the plane is..... :-X

The NSA doesn't know everything, but if anything its possible that the CIA tried finding out after the fact what might have been on the plane

Though they can easily require all airlines to subscribe the the sat service so that it reports where the plane is and doesn't just ping it.
