Insurance claim help
« on: March 10, 2014, 10:49:39 AM »
So basically I was in a car accident a few months ago. I was brought by ambulance to the ER. After many tests and scans my bills were sent to my car insurance. The ER bills were paid by my car insurance. The remaining bills were coming from the billing dept of the cardiac dept. in the hospital. The car insurance requested over a dozen times from the hospital for an itemized bill. They have not sent this. They do not respond.

The hospital sent these bills to collections since they were not paid.

There is no one to talk to at the hospital.

What should I do at this point

First thing I'd do is explain to the collections people that they can actually get the money if they get you an itemized bill...
Collections people are usually pretty interested in getting the money, so that could work.

Do you have the "no-fault" info?  The ER probably sent paperwork from the 'no-fault' health coverage used by the car insurance. If so, and you can find those papers- there's a case manager's name and number on those papers.  Call him.
My favorite cause: cssy.org

I spoke to collections. They just want the money. They tried to get the itemized bill from the hospital also to no avail

I've been speaking to car insurance contact weekly. They say there's nothing more they can do.

There is a billing office in the hospital... Did you speak to them directly? Did you go in to see them in person?

I assume they have a billing office. I would physically go to the hospital.

They're not monsters, and even if they are they are monsters that like to get $$$. If you go there, I would be shocked if you couldn't find someone to take your insurance companies money for you.

Send the collection agency a "Request for validation" - (find a sample template online), they are required to respond within 30days (law may vary by state)
It worked for me with a similar issue

It sounds like collections doesn't have the itemized bill either.

I had the same issue, I sent the request for validation thinking that the  collection agency won't have it and they won't be allowed to collect the debt.
Surely enough I received a stack of papers in the mail from the collection agency including the itemized bill.
- Bottom line -They can get it from the hospital if they really want to.
(And if they don't, they may not be allowed to pursue the debt- consult an attorney)

Make sure to send it certified mail.

Well, tell them you have an insurance policy which will be happy to pay in full if they get one, but that you will never pay a cent without one.

It's a pretty reasonable request.

That may work. The only issue would be if it drags out a bit, and end up on the credit report. Can always dispute it later, just another pain to worru about...
