My SIL sent money with Chase and skipped a period in the email address, and they wouldn't do a thing to either reach out to the receiving bank or to the person who received it.

In the end, I found out who the person was and I reached out to her and she very willingly returned the money once she verified that it was my SIL who sent her the money.

Another issue is that the receiver doesn't even have a method of returning the money even if they wanted to because they don't see the email address or phone number registered where it originates from.

Zelle is very flawed (deliberately?) in its logic.

i know someone that was sent money to the wrong Gmail that didn't yet exist, and was desperate for the funds so he just opened such a Gmail account and verified with the bank to receive the funds

I did the same.  I had one digit off in the recipient's phone number.
I texted the number I sent the money to and he ignored me.
Chase wasn't interested.

Lesson for next time:  Send $1 to a new recipient as a trial. 
Then send the rest.

Two better options:

1) have them show you their QR code to scan (if in same location)
2) tell them to send you a payment request (via Zelle)

I usually see if the person's name pops up above the space to put in the amount once I out in the name or number.
