Kayak/Airfare.com Bait & Switch
« on: March 13, 2014, 05:04:22 PM »
We searched Kayak for 2 tickets and were shown a price of $1805 for the two tickets together.
We clicked "Select" and it then took us to a booking page to confirm the information. On the side of the page it said this ticket is being bought from Airfare.com.
We entered our personal and payment information, and reviewed all the ticket information on the page including the price which was still $1805. We then clicked "Agree and Book" and the screen says we just bought two tickets totaling $1942!
The tickets jumped approximately $150 without any warning!
Kayak tells us to speak to Airfare.com. Airfare.com tells us to speak to Kayak (and rudely insinuated we were lying!).
Kayak then checks with their programmers who admit the price was $1805 "right before" we booked, but "while we booked" the price changed. Kayak claims the screen would have changed the price a moment before we clicked "Agree and Book" - which it didn't.
We don't want to cancel the tickets because prices have gone up since and we have relatives on this specific flight and want to ensure we fly with them.
We are afraid if we dispute the difference with the Credit Card company, Kayak or Airfare.com may just cancel our tickets.
What can people here advise us to do? It would be very helpful.
Thank you very much.

P.S. We understand that this may not have been a deliberate bait 'n switch but they should still stand behind their service.

How soon is the flight? Maybe wait to start the dispute till closer to the flight if it is soon.

Chase says we have 60 days to dispute. The flight is after that.

This is a tactic that is used by the Online Travel Agencies and it happens all the time.

#1. If you dispute the charge the airline will cancel the ticket because you are claiming they are fraudulent charges.

#2. Do you have any screen shots? Anything as proof? Do you know what class of service your booked into and if the fare is a bulk of published fare?

#3 How long ago did you purchase the tickets?

On your point number 1 did an airline ever go after the persons FF account or the like when a charge was disputed with that airline?

They can not do that. They would need to show cause. You are allowed to dispute a charge and Airline agrees to that when they decide to accept that credit card.

Credit Card Chargebacks happen all the time.

My suggestion is to threaten a Chargeback because agencies hate them. ARC usually hits an Agency with a service fee regardless of outcome.

1 - Then what can we do? By the way, we wouldn't dispute the whole charge only the difference in price.
2 - No screen shots. We never thought this would happen.
3 - A week ago.
