In honor of the
rosh yeshiva's* trip to Kansas City, I present you my TR of my visit to
Hakadosh BBQ (renamed Wandering Q, in honor of fanatics like me), which has weekly pop-ups around NYC during the summer. I visited last week, when they were at Beth Shalom in Lawrence.
I had the 1/2 lb brisket platter, which came with slow smoked brisket, baked beans, corn bread, slaw, and pickles. I asked for a roll also so I could make some into a sandwich and they threw that in, along with an extra piece of corn bread so my D(d)F could have some also. $20
My D(d)F had the smoked chicken sandwich ($12), and the house limeade ($3).
I also got a draft beer from a stand that seemed to be unaffiliated but was set up next to them in the shul parking lot.
The brisket was perhaps the best I've ever had (sorry dad, it's probably just because I had this more recently). Very flavorful, and tender, but not overpowering at all. I usually avoid any cognizable pieces of fat in my meat, but it was so soft that I just went right for it. The little burnt bits that fell in were quite perfect.
Cornbread was really good. Not as good as my homemade one that I eat as it leaves the oven, but far better than I expected coming out of a warmer. Crispy, and just how I like cornbread to taste.
Beans, slaw, pickles. Who's gonna eat beans when there's brisket? We tasted them to be yotzei, and we were yotzei.
Smoked chicken sandwich. It was shredded smoked chicken, mixed with some sauce on a sandwich. My lady claims it was better than my brisket. I tasted it, and it had a very nice smoky flavor, very good. My brisket was better.
Total bill: $38. We both agreed we'd come again.
Other stuff I saw: The short rib looked very nice, not usually on menu but was special for Beth Shalom. I had a tayva to eat a turkey leg, but am traumatized from eating turkey legs in yeshiva, especially from those awful tendons that run through them.
Kashrus: StarK
Pro-tip: Find out in advance if there is a yeshiva wedding at a shul you're going to on a date.
*I didn't say what we are all Yoshvei.
