Not for the average household.
For a working man it definitely is.

well, they should be. The most common day to day problems involve choshen mishpat.
Lol, are you sure? It's called Orach Chaim for a reason. And Yoreh De'ah would probably come next by volume of shailos. Even Ha'ezer and Choshen Mishpat are absolutely more of a specialty. Yoreh Yoreh is a much more common smicha than Yadin Yadin.

Choshen mishpat is more complicated because it's so much day to day & it involves people interacting with one another.

Your rabbi told you to ask someone more experienced ? Isn't it his job to be " more experienced " ? At least you've come to the right place.

Perhaps look at Parshat Yitro שרי אלפים שרי מאות... ואת הדבר הקשה יביאון אליך

Unfortunately dealing with crooks is probably one of the most common things out there. Every rabbi should be required to master those halachos.

+1 but who cares, a rebbi doesn't need to be a posek. He should be someone that has daas Torah and can help guide you.

I disagree.
With which part ? That there are millions of crooks, or that every rabbi should learn how to deal with them ?

There aren't as many crooks as you think there are.

It's the police job's to deal with them, not a Rabbi.

A Rabbi isn't required to do anything. If anything, you can advise communities to hire rabbis with those capabilities.

A rabbis purpose in a residential neighborhood is to deal with household questions, not business/financial questions. Just like a bank in a residential neighborhood isn't going to give you a billion dollar line of credit.

Furthermore as 'sport' said, a Rebbi is anyone you learn torah from and look up to. If you're luck you'll be able to seek his advice on any subject. That doesn't mean he's a 'Rabbi'.

Whatever you say. Don't know about you but I'm not going to the cops every time someone does something crooked. The guy has an innocent wife & kids that I don't want to see thrown out on the street. I try to see if there's any other way I could get some money back.

Then you've never been a victim of large fraud. I can assure you if someone blatantly stole a million dollars from you, you'd call the FBI immediately.

(and FWIW, when someone I know asked R Elyashiv that question, he said it's obvious)

The discussion here wasn't about large scale fraud, it was about a few hundred shekel. I hope you don't go running to the fbi over such small things.

Nor are you gonna go to BD, so what do you want from the Rabbi?

A simple phone call. He goes & looks it up in a sefer & responds.

Would you call a lawyer about $200? Why should you call a rabbi?

Because I want to know Halachakally if I'm allowed to. The lawyer would charge more then that just for the phone call.

Maybe 200 dollars is nothing to you, but for a young man living in Israel 200 dollars could mean a lot.
