Air France, transit through Paris
« on: November 10, 2010, 02:35:25 PM »
Hi all

I saw that not alot was writen about Air France yet, so I will start a topic

I will be traveling next week with AF from Zrh via CDG to JFK and back. I will be flying Premium Economy on the way out and business on the way back. If someone has a specific question, that I should know in advance, please let me know and I will try to pay attention to that. I will post a small tripreport on the flights and airports when I am back

Here we go, small trip report:

Someone sold me his AF miles, he had 118000 that expired the next day, so I offered him 350 Dollars and used them for my trip. Taxes were another 380 Dollars

Outbound Premium Economy Flex 67000 miles (no business avail)
Way back Business Classic award 50000 miles

Check in in Zrh was very fast, they give priority to luggage of PE pax, but no lounge access
The flight was on a small plane, PE pax sit in the business section and get served the same menue as business. One is not able to order kosher food within Europe on AF
Arrival was at terminal 2G, flight to New York from terminal 2E. They have a shuttle bus (10 min drive) bringing connecting pax straight to the Terminal 2E after security, so that was very good. No screening needed in CDG. Transfer was very easy! priority boarding was strictly enforced and PE pax were able to use the special line. Seat was very comfortable, big touch screen. They give PE pax a business kit as well. There is a big difference to economy, its not E+.

Service was good, meals were regular Economy class but you get served first. The cabin is seperated from regular Economy and has only 21 seats, so its really quiet. Seat does not go flat, but extends much more then in economy class.
All in all a good value and very nice for a day flight.

Flight back

Business Check in at JFK went very fast. My suitcases were more then the allowed 23 Kg, but they didnt charge me. The lounge was ok, have seen nicer ones. They started boarding 40 min before the flight, I only went 20 min before, so I cant comment on the boarding process, as i was one of the last ones.
The seats were comfortable, service was good and the meal was decent as well. Its as good as LH and LX (old seat) business class. The only thing that stuck out was the 2-3-2 layout. Most airlines dont do this in business anymore, so if you get the wrong seat you can be stuck between 2 people, even in business.
Transfer in Paris was a pain this time, as no direct shuttle was offered. I had to exit the airport, take a shuttle curbside to 2G and then go through security again. The flight to ZRH was short and again no kosher food even in business.

Air France was better then expected, for me it was worth it as I got some cheap miles. If you are able to book them with Delta miles and not pay a huge amount of taxes, its for sure worth considering.

Great Report!

FYI, You need to pay the same taxes and surcharges whether you book with AF or DL

I know DL charged fuel surcharges for flights originating outside the US, but I haven't heard of them charging surcharges for flights originating in the US.

I can either fly alitalia business or air france business from tlv-jfk. The transatlantic alitalia flight is on an a330 and the transatlantic air france is on an a380 anybody has experience? Which is a better option? Are either of them lie flat in business?

I beg to differ. AF (even on the A380) is not lie-flat while the new Alitalia A330 has fantastic reviews with a 1-2-1 staggered layout. Also the TLV-FCO is shorter than TLV-CDG so you will have more time on a proper plane. Alitalia by a mile

Wow, AF didn't go lie-flat in A380?
I've heard horror story after horror story about problems with Alitalia.  Have you flown them before?
