I thought I posted about this. Avast 2015 and K9 do not get along.  Install 9.x.  Here's the link - http://goo.gl/infY7w

It seems like Avast is highly recommended on DDF and elsewhere, but is it smart to use an old version? Would using a different ani-virus a better choice?

Additionally when I clicked on your link I got the following msg. "The site ahead contains harmful programs

Attackers on download-euro.oldapps.com might attempt to trick you into installing programs that harm your browsing experience (for example, by changing your homepage or showing extra ads on sites you visit).

Google Safe Browsing recently found harmful programs on download-euro.oldapps.com.

If you understand the risks to your security, you may visit this site before the harmful programs have been removed."

Seems a bit scary...
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

That warning is because the site hosted different software which contained malware.  I've verified hashes of the Avast setup file and it matches the ones from Avast.  Either way, new link for download is: http://goo.gl/9D0hkD  (links to google drive)

Did you post that to Google drive? Did you get it from someone online, or do you have it from Avast?

This PC Magazine article dated Dec. 2014, gives the 2 top spots for free Anti-virus to Panda & Malwarebytes. Agree or disagree? Maybe it's a better choice than getting an old version of Avast?

I posted it to Google Drive.  I do not have it from Avast, but as I wrote earlier, it's the same hashes as the one from Avast, which means its the same exact file :)  It's also signed...

I do not know about Panda & Malwarebytes.  I've only used Malwarebytes to clean malware, not as an active realtime protection service.  IIRC it hogged my PC.  I definitely wouldn't recommend running it in addition to an AV.  I do have a friend that loves Panda, but I don't use it myself to give an opinion.

You wrote here that "Kaspersky is the best". Did you only mean relative to AVG, or is it better than Avast too?

Better then Avast as well.  It's just not free, so I don't usually mention it.

Oh. I ended up buying the Kaspersky deal from Newegg which was on DDMS today. Thanks!

Just wanted to clarify.  When installing Avast, do not install the webshield.  Only install File Shield.  (agav, i dont recommend installing any of the tools either.  only thing checked should be File Shield).  Web Shield still causes PC to crash if running K9.
