I'm confused as to why they claim that norton antivirus is the solution to it  ??? ???

"The Norton Solution most like K9 Web Protection is Norton Antivirus Plus."

The 3 seconds it takes to change your dns and poof, you're no longer using opendns
OpenDNS on a router with port 53 redirected to the router, and on a PC for a non-admin user, is not very bad. But certainly not a strong solution.

How do you redirect port 53 to the router? What does that accomplish?

Why isn't this a strong solution (or is less strong than K9)?

you are berating other good solutions
that is incorrect. i am not berating anybody, i'm just pointing out pointing out serious flaws in their system. with all due respect to these filters and for their investment and development, they have very serious flaws which must be addressed (such as images and some more...)
Such a long post promoting a service coming from a first-time poster, and then claiming that you are just a happy user is somewhat ridiculous.
you can claim whatever you want about any user who writes positive or negative according to your liking. i am not looking to busy myself with following forums and therefore i haven't joined every forum but i see there is a want for information which isn't being addressed so i am trying to fill in. i have a strong passion for NetFree being with them since the very beginning and helping it grow. i have volunteered in development, translation and even phone support and in any way i am able because i want to help the klal. i haven't ever received anything in return. just to be clear, there are HUNDREDS of people just like me in NetFree, the users (al pi rov) are very passionate about NetFree and want to do all they can to help it. you can see this on all the israeli forums (try searching "נטפרי" on פרוג)

if you are not convinced just take a look at my accounts on NetFree Forum, NetFree Wiki or Prog. what i do there is assist other users as a fellow user.

Besides the point that you do not address, that from what I can see this doesn't have any real deep-system client that prevents using the internet completely unfiltered. In which case - I'm not sure it is the case, but judging from the guides they have - it is a total joke for anyone (which is everyone) that has admin access to the PC or has a tiny bit of tech knowledge!
you are correct. i did not address every part of NetFree but if you are asking i'll introduce you to WiFree from NetFree.

Wifree is a software installed on the PC (android in development too) which blocks internet access whenever you are not connected to NetFree. read more here https://netfree.link/wiki/WiFree_Software

i hope this addresses all of your issues.

I thought there hasn't been any updates since 2013, when Symantec bought K9 and announced it was no longer supported. I'm not sure if classifications have been updated in years already.

Can K9 still be freshly installed with an already obtained license?

You need to download the install file from a 3rd party as Symantec is not giving it out anymore, try Download Cnet

Any idea how to get a license if Symantec is not giving any out? I assume there is a way.

Yes. The only way to update the DNS on an optimum router is to call/chat optimum. They will ask for your CMAC (located on a sticker on the bottom of your modem). They don't immediately update the DNS servers, it takes them a few days. Convoluted process but it's the only way to do it, as they don't allow changing dns through the router interface anymore.

Thanks, do you know if they'll also set up port 53?

Also is there anything to configure in the modem itself ?

Sounds like the answer I'm looking for.

Does it slow down the phone at all?
Creator of Truple here.  99% of the time the app is literally doing nothing.  It does a small amount of processing whenever a screenshot is taken, but that's it.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

Disclaimer: I am very affiliated with Truple, and very bias... :D

I recently moved over to truple and it is exactly what I need. Doesn't slow down my phone at all and doesn't get in the way at all!

Thanks for a great app

although livigent does a pretty good job identifying inappropriate content there is still unfortunately lots of things that slip by (especially images - their image filter is a total joke. if it is turned on you wont find a clean picture of an apple (i guess they think apples are inappropriate  ::) ) but you will still see other images that you don't want to see and with it off it wont get in your way but essentially you don't have a filter.

i prefer NetFree (TAG supports it in some offices and you can get it through e-mail info@netfree.link or over the phone 562-332-6000)
the only setback is that as of now it only works via VPN (outside Israel where they have several ISP internet providers who provide the service)

NetFree takes a unique approach to the image problem: they check each individual image MANUALLY. although it sounds a bit primitive they have successfully created an extremely efficient system in which image checking usually takes approximately 1-5 seconds. the images are reviewed by non-Jewish staff in places the likes of India, Bangladesh and several other countries around the world to cover 24 hrs 6 days a week.

to date NetFree has reviewed 478,969,382 images.

sites in NetFree are also checked manually. after it is checked and determined to be kosher, it no longer has to be checked again for any user. they also have a text robot to remove offensive language and a customized filter for shopping sites.

i have been using it since its founding around 5 years ago and i still recommend it to all. it is non profit and is just here to help the klal and to make a 100% solution available to all.

In Israel it costs 15 NIS per month (approx. $4\mo) in the US it is 30 NIS (approx. $8\mo) [this is due to the Hi-Speed VPN server costs]

Disclaimer: i do not work for NetFree nor have i received any benefit from them (other than their great product - at full cost like any costumer) i do volunteer for NetFree and i do not and have not received any benefit from NetFree.

the WiFree software is only for Windows (although a BETA version for android is out though not for the general public)

The filter is very flexible and easy to customize. NetFree opens any site that is kosher (or can be made kosher with filtering including custom filtering solutions for specific sites) additionally users can customize the default setting (whitelist or blacklist) and what sites or categories they want opened or closed based on times and days or even "for the next half hour" etc.. there is also the option in which your Kehilla can decide what is open or closed [they can let you ADD to their settings as well]
see more here: https://netfree.link/wiki/Personal_Filter_Settings

In Israel it is 15NIS for the entire network (as many computers you put on the filtered network) [the filter is at the ISP]
out of Israel it is VPN based so if you have a VPN capable router then it can be on the entire network for 30NIS (price for the USA and UK VPN server option, 20NIS for the IL, FR and AR servers) otherwise it has to be placed on each computer individually

Interesting. That makes me wonder ... If I only have service on one of the devices (and get that filtered) and always tether to the other devices,  would those other devices automatically be filtered? (Because the data that's being sent is already 'filtered')

If it's VPN based, does it already work with Android VPN framework?
When do they expect widespread android availability?

if the other devices use the VPN on the original device then technically it should work (you would have to install the security certificate on each device)
