The internet is here to stay, there is no way around it. Almost every working family in Lalewood has at least one smartphone plus laptops etc.
Honestly I partially agree with the anti-filter crowd, that we must educate our children on how to use the internet responsibly and to deal with the nisyonos. Filtering and limiting device access is a good bandaid and is definitely necessary but is NOT the solution.
Its back to basics, learn mussar with the children, instill yiras shomayim and daven.
You couldn't say it better, the only way we know how to be protected is if we are educated, to become a successful soldier you must first have training with proper tools.

No, You can't lock a wifi that doesn't belong to you. Even if you remove the wifi chip from your device you can still connect a usb wifi adapter.
I meant any wifi out there, you can always ask the owner to put a lock on it, correct?

Not if it's a hotspot.
They are talking about Optimum hotspots which you can access as long as you have an Optimum login.

Thanks, can you explain how that works?

If you have Optimum internet at home, you have free use of their hotspots.

There's a username going around Lakewood.
Tons of bochrim have either hidden smartphones or iPod touches with unflitered access to anything they'd like.
As most of these bochrim aren't looking to protect themselves, I'm not really sure what a good solution could be aside from making parents aware of the issue, or possibly getting Optimum to shut down access to the popular accounts.
You aren't talking about 14 year old HS kids here, these bochurim are old enough to have kids and probably will have kids within 12-18 Iy"h. You're going to tell their mother?!

IMHO a 21+ year old bochur is old enough to make his own decision whether he wants/needs internet access; the most you can do is try to convince them to install software filters...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating Yeshivos should have Wifi in the building, but if it's there already...

yup, the irv and dorm both have free unfiltered wifi. its a fact, shocking but true.
This is going back at least five years! and no one can do a thing.

Sure they could. They could be adults about it, tell the bochurim about it, and have everyone bring their smartphone in to have a filter placed on it.  Or they could continue pretending it's not a problem, stick their heads in the sand and say a hundred times "internet is assur."

Sure they should. But for a multitude of reasons; e.g. not knowing how or not wanting to pay etc.., many people don't have filters on their phones. Yehsivos, especially those that have mostly older bochurim like Lakewood, should make a point of making it mandatory. Before the zman starts everyone needs to show they have a filter on their phone.

You misunderstood my point. When I said make the parents aware, I mean to say that someone needs to educate the parents about the risks of their sons having smartphones. The parents may know that their son doesn't have an internet plan, but they don't know about the free wifi everywhere. And yes, I'll agree that after a certain age, let's say around 20, the parents will probably have no control at all of what phone their son is holding, but better that they know and be in control when their son is still young.

Either k9 (free) or netnanny. Of course, you would probably want to download smart app protector, to lock the browser and play store.

k9 can lock browser and app store.

k9 is easier to bypass. I also recommend smart app for other features as well, such as locking any app, locking wifi, locking new apps etc.
