Boulders Beach
R17035 min• "I found that there were two different entrances, boardwalk and beach. The boardwalk has a higher density of penguins but if you want a better experience, I recommend visiting the beach side- especially at low tide. Because of the tide I was able to walk past the few dozen folks on the beach, climb under and over some boulders, and encounter effectively a different private beach- with penguins!!"
• For budget travelers, take the train to Simonstown and from there a cab to Boulders beach - R20.

Map of Kosher Johannesburg

NameTypeContactLocation & Description
Corner Cafe (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 440-3160 Link
Corner of Queens square and cross road in Glenhazel. Corner Café is the best place to go (or maybe the only) for kosher gluten free muffins. I’m told they’re very good. They also have great breakfasts and pastas, but I usually stick with a toasted cheese and chips.
Dee-Jays (Sandton)
Milk
+27 11 883-2265 Link
Morningview Shopping Centre, 100 South Road, 2196 - Dee-Jays provides casual dairy food that is perfect for a breakfast out with the family. Their fishballs are really good and if you need a cake in the Sandton area, they’re the place to go.
Market Cafe (Norood Mall)
Milk
Cholov Yisroel cafe
KosherWorld, Mi Vami Kosher and Chop N Wok (Glenhazel)
+27 11 440 1402 Website
1 Long Avenue, Johannesburg, 2192
Gelatisimo (Glenhazel)
Across the road from Kosher World, authentic Italian gelato. Chalav Yisroel. Absolutely fantastic.
Michelos (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 885-1500 Link
17 Northfield Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Michelos is the second best pizza restaurant. They are very centrally located (in the Jewish area of Glenhazel) and their food is nice. Never go there the night after Pesach because you’ll wait hours but most other times are good, plus they serve chalav yisrael.
Nandos Kosher (Savoy)
Meat
+27 11 885-1496 Website
553 Louis Botha Ave, Savoy, Johannesburg, 2090, South Africa - Nandos is a large chain of Portuguese chicken restaurants, but there is only one kosher Nandos in South Africa, so be aware that you can’t step into any of them! They serve top notch chicken but be sure to also try their beef burger (and order extra sauce).
Next Door "Non-CY" (Norwood)
Milk
+27 11 728-2577 Link
80 Grant Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Next Door is rated as a top restaurant in Johannesburg, kosher and not, so you know it must be pretty good. It is usually full so booking is highly recommended. While their sushi may not be top class, their pizzas certainly are and, if you’re around in Summer, definitely try their fish braai (barbeque in South African).
Pie Works (Sandringham)
+27 11 485 2447 Website
74 George Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Their pies (clearly) are the best kosher pies in the country and are perfect if you want to buy some to take home and reheat. Their burgers are delicious and the have a milk side with pizza that is really good. They’re situated on what is known as the Kosher Strip, so any Jew will be able to direct you.
RTG "Ready to Go" (Norwood)
A fast food place next door to ... Next Door. While they do offer steak and a Chinese menu, the focus is their extensive burger and hot dog menu.
The Deli Store (Sandton)

Shop 52, (opposite Woolworths) Morning Glen Shopping Mall Cnr Bowling & Kelvin Road Gallo Manor - Reviewed in CBS's TR, as having excellent food for very low prices. According to Google is "Permanently Closed".

They have some items Cholov Yisroel, which they will serve on disposables on request

Major Activities
Apartheid Museum
Flea Market
Gold Reef City - amusement park, along with other African themed attractions (tribal dancing, old "gold mine tour")
Lion Park - see lions from your car up close, pet lion cubs.
Monte Casino - Casino and shopping mall, with cool "outdoor" Tuscan style
Soweto Tour
Pilanesberg Safari- If you can't make it to Kruger for malaria, time or other concerns,  this is a much smaller park with less wildlife, and not as good of an experience, but definitely well worth it. About 2 hours out of Joburg, it can be done in your own vehicle, but will be a lot better with a guided game drive.
Sun City Right outside of Pilansberg
Elephant & Monkey Sanctuary- About an hour out of Joburg. Get close to elephants, touch, feed and ride them. The monkey sanctuary has a massive enclosure with hundreds of various monkeys and lemurs. No feeding or touching, unless one jumps on you. If you do go to Pilansberg, this can be done on the way.

1) SIm cards and airtime are very cheap I would just purchase one at the Airport. If dts is important such as gps then Tmobile is worthless there
2) No difference which side you fly. I would recommend flying to one and leaving from the other. I walked the falls on both sides in 1/2 day. hotels are better in Zim and stay one close to falls so you can walk everywhere. Make sure to buy the unlimited visa so you can go back and forth.

1. MTN Sim Cards can be bought in a shop for 2 rands. One can buy sim cards in the Woolworths store in the airport. At arrivals, there is a company Virgin Mobile that gives out free sim cards. Otherwise, getting a sim card can be a hassle, due to RICA legislation, one has to show ID, and proof of address. (Tourists can get away by showing proof of accommodations)

2. Zimbabwean side - is a much better view, although one should visit both sides to fully appreciate the falls. When I was there last, the Zimbabwean side of the view was obstructed with mist. Also helpful, is to bring along a lite raincoat. If you stay in Livingstone, the Royal Livingstone Hotel or Zambezi Sun is situated right by the falls and gives you free access to the park. Otherwise, if you are staying elsewhere in Livingstone, you would be about 10-12 km (6 miles) from the falls. There is also a hike from the Zambian side, called Boiling Point. https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/boiling-pot-18632399  Also, in the park -- beware of the baboons, one of them stole my lunch, along with my 1kg block of cheese. Staying in Livingstone was more convenient, as getting to Chobe is inexpensive - shared taxi from Livingstone to Kazungula border cost a few dollars.  Also, some hotels in Livingstone provide free shuttles to the falls as well as airport transfer.

The visa you mean is the Kaza UniVisa - be aware: Zambia and Zim ran out of those visa stickers in the second half of 2017, -- although available now again. Do monitor this webpage: https://www.victoriafalls-guide.net/univisa-zimbabwe-zambia.html

Why schlep to Soweto, one can do a tour of Hillbrow, CBD (Central Business District), and Alexandra Township.

Also, worth a visit is the Museum of Military History, situated next to the Johannesburg Zoo. Lots of WW I and II fighter planes,
like the only surviving Me 262B-1 Night fighter (Nachtjäger) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_National_Museum_of_Military_History

SAB World of Beer tour with Beer Tasting: http://www.worldofbeer.co.za/pages/visit

Also, there is the Kromdraai Gold Mine and the Sterkfontein Caves.

The museum is a nice Chol hamoed thing, only if you;re into SA history and Old war items and their shrine to the "Oobaas" (Jan Smuts)
Really not something to go to Africa for
The Kromdraai, Sterkfontein and the Rhino Park can all be done together in one day (they are all in the same area in the Cradle of Human Kind)
Personally I like the Rhino Park more than Lion Park anyway

Your Idea of getting to VFA early doesn;t work flight wise (earliest flight lands 1230pm) (same for LVI which has only that option)
you;re basically only going to be there for 24 hours (which i have done and is more than enough time) i would skip Chobe though... no point if you;re going to the Kruger anyway

The Genesis is right in the frum area and is satisfactory

The garden route is a stunning drive, KAAIMANS RIVER PASS etc
but its a 5 hour drive from just from  George to CPT and alot of the nice scenery is on the other side between Plett and George
the drive is 8 hrs from PE to CPT and the roads may not be in the best shape
I would skip it all
you aren;t leaving much time for CPT which has much more to offer than the Garden Route

I meant those places to visit, if one is in Johannesburg anyways, and has some time to "kill". I think Chobe is worth it for a day trip if in Victoria Falls
area -- if going between July and September. Chobe is particularly good to see large herds of Elephants, Giraffes, Hippos, and crocodiles.

I drove many times between PE Oudtshoorn and CPT, and roads in Eastern and Western Cape are significantly better than the rest of the country.
Johannesburg has plenty of roads in bad shape and potholes that will swallow your car. Although, the worst roads are in Lesotho.

I seem to like Tsitsikamma and the Crags area much more, I personally prefer to skip Cape Town.

If you have a friend or family member who has tmobile, it may be worth getting added to their plan for the month, but obviously that's not always an option.

I stayed at the kingdom hotel in Zimbabwe and enjoyed.

Monte Casino is an interesting experience in JNB, but nothing too crazy.

Not sure if I can be much of a help otherwise.

Or you can just get a sim and use it in your unlocked AT&T phone.

Sorry I meant a T-Mobile sim.
Gotcha. Yea, at $10 plus tax, I had free data (2g) to make whatsapp and Google voice calls, as well as texting throughout most of  my trip. I believe Zambia and Zimbabwe are not on tmobiles free roaming, although things may have changed.

That could be, though I was only in South Africa so I wouldn't know. My point was if the op had an AT&T phone he could just get a T-Mobile sim and pay for service for a month with no further obligations.

Thank you all for the advice! I think I will be spending 2 nights in Livingston now as there is not much to do in JNB anyways. I'll arrive mid-day on Wednesday after having food dropped up from like kosherworld to the JNB airport and then spend the rest of the day seeing both sides of the falls. Thursday I'll do full day Chobe and return to JNB Friday and do rhino park.

Why is T-mobile favored over other companies? What are the rates? I also consume lots of data which is why I fear getting a sim and service while in SA will get pricey as I consume more data...

Is there nothing that notable to justify the drive from George or PE to CPT?

How much time would you give in CPT? I thought the general consensus was 4-5 days?

Free texting and data (at "2G" speeds, often faster), free wifi calling to US, and $0.20/minute for all (non wifi) calls to or from anywhere as long as you're in a T-Mobile covered country.

the PE to George is the better part of the trip (Saulius is even recommending you skip CPT for that... I wouldn;t as a first time to CPT)
there are notable things on the drive, the question is, is it worth the "detour"
You are going to be in CPT for Friday, Sunday and Monday, that's not really alot of time
Plus it is in middle of the winter (if you can call it winter) and the weather may not co-operate
you are also coming early for Whale season and late for Wine season
What are you looking to do in CPT?

I assumed that he would want to do this typical Cape Town activities that do not require any special time of year weather, like Cape Point, Boulder Beach, and the Cape of Good Hope.

I assumed that he would want to do this typical Cape Town activities that do not require any special time of year weather, like Cape Point, Boulder Beach, and the Cape of Good Hope.

Yes, but that can be all done in one day. What else is there do in Cape Town, other than surfing Muizenberg Beach all day? Also, noteworthy is that in Cape Town one can get an extremely delicious fish called Kingklip -- Checkers Supermarket in Seapoint has a kosher fish counter - they will fry it for you on request.

(There was some controversy 1-2 decades ago, about its kashrus, as 'questions arised because of the difficulty layman had in finding the scales, which are thin and small and covered with a mucous layer' --  Rav Yitzchak Kossowsky permitted it - he who was a prominent Rav in Eastern Europe and Rosh Beis Din in Johannesburg -- Rav Kossowsky immigrated to South Africa in 1932 (niftar in 1951), and was the brother-in-law of the gadol hador Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzensky).

R Sternbuch and R Salzer forbade it
skip the kingklip, have some smoked snoek
or go to Hout Bay market for any fresh fish (Mariners Wharf) - the Seal island boat tour leave from there

Rav Sternbuch (shlita, with all respect) -- also declared that the Beis Din's shechita is treif, and caused lots of machlokes in Johannesburg.

One should also explain why issuing a psak to assur it, is not being motzei la'az al harishonim who permitted it.

From http://avodah.aishdas.narkive.com/CnXIEKj7/the-kashrut-of-kingklip-its-turbulent-history-and-who-decides
quote:

It was stated very clearly in an email from Rabbi Yossi Salzer to the OU on Feb
12, 2004, where he wrote: "Cuskeels or not-the Torah says: with
fins and scales it's Kosher. Kingklip has fins & scales. It's Kosher!"

So did R Salzer until he was able to join the Bais Din under his own terms and "fix" the shichta issues
That was a long time ago...

My point with the kingklip is why go for something that has issues when you can get L'chatchila amazing fish without trying something exotic
Kabeljou
Snoek
Sole
Hake
Kippers
Trout
 etc etc

Would anybody please enlighten me what were the issues of the Johannesburg Beis Din schechita back then? Not to mention, it caused the Beis Din's
shochtim to lose their parnasah, because Rav Sternbuch created a new schechita calling it Mehadrin. What made it Mehadrin? Hungarian minhagim?

I am speaking about the many decades ago, as I was asking about "back then", when the shochtim lost their parnasasah, not about now.
