Description and Notes
Boulders Beach
R17035 min• "I found that there were two different entrances, boardwalk and beach. The boardwalk has a higher density of penguins but if you want a better experience, I recommend visiting the beach side- especially at low tide. Because of the tide I was able to walk past the few dozen folks on the beach, climb under and over some boulders, and encounter effectively a different private beach- with penguins!!"
• For budget travelers, take the train to Simonstown and from there a cab to Boulders beach - R20.

Map of Kosher Johannesburg

NameTypeContactLocation & Description
Corner Cafe (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 440-3160 Link
Corner of Queens square and cross road in Glenhazel. Corner Café is the best place to go (or maybe the only) for kosher gluten free muffins. I’m told they’re very good. They also have great breakfasts and pastas, but I usually stick with a toasted cheese and chips.
Dee-Jays (Sandton)
Milk
+27 11 883-2265 Link
Morningview Shopping Centre, 100 South Road, 2196 - Dee-Jays provides casual dairy food that is perfect for a breakfast out with the family. Their fishballs are really good and if you need a cake in the Sandton area, they’re the place to go.
Market Cafe (Norood Mall)
Milk
Cholov Yisroel cafe
KosherWorld, Mi Vami Kosher and Chop N Wok (Glenhazel)
+27 11 440 1402 Website
1 Long Avenue, Johannesburg, 2192
Gelatisimo (Glenhazel)
Across the road from Kosher World, authentic Italian gelato. Chalav Yisroel. Absolutely fantastic.
Michelos (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 885-1500 Link
17 Northfield Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Michelos is the second best pizza restaurant. They are very centrally located (in the Jewish area of Glenhazel) and their food is nice. Never go there the night after Pesach because you’ll wait hours but most other times are good, plus they serve chalav yisrael.
Nandos Kosher (Savoy)
Meat
+27 11 885-1496 Website
553 Louis Botha Ave, Savoy, Johannesburg, 2090, South Africa - Nandos is a large chain of Portuguese chicken restaurants, but there is only one kosher Nandos in South Africa, so be aware that you can’t step into any of them! They serve top notch chicken but be sure to also try their beef burger (and order extra sauce).
Next Door "Non-CY" (Norwood)
Milk
+27 11 728-2577 Link
80 Grant Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Next Door is rated as a top restaurant in Johannesburg, kosher and not, so you know it must be pretty good. It is usually full so booking is highly recommended. While their sushi may not be top class, their pizzas certainly are and, if you’re around in Summer, definitely try their fish braai (barbeque in South African).
Pie Works (Sandringham)
+27 11 485 2447 Website
74 George Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Their pies (clearly) are the best kosher pies in the country and are perfect if you want to buy some to take home and reheat. Their burgers are delicious and the have a milk side with pizza that is really good. They’re situated on what is known as the Kosher Strip, so any Jew will be able to direct you.
RTG "Ready to Go" (Norwood)
A fast food place next door to ... Next Door. While they do offer steak and a Chinese menu, the focus is their extensive burger and hot dog menu.
The Deli Store (Sandton)
011-656-3142 / 4915  info@thedelistore.co.za, http://thedelistore.co.za/menus/main-menu/
Shop 52, (opposite Woolworths) Morning Glen Shopping Mall Cnr Bowling & Kelvin Road Gallo Manor - Reviewed in CBS's TR, as having excellent food for very low prices. According to Google is "Permanently Closed".
So Sushi (Glenhazel)
Jozi Blue (Glenhazel)
Milk
They have some items Cholov Yisroel, which they will serve on disposables on request

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - Uber
Executive Bus - Shuttle from HLA airport to anywhere in Sandton for R80 per person.
Public Bus -
Train - Gautrain from JNB airport is R135-155 depending on destination. Must purchase gold card before for R13.

Major Activities
Apartheid Museum
Flea Market
Gold Reef City - amusement park, along with other African themed attractions (tribal dancing, old "gold mine tour")
Lion Park - see lions from your car up close, pet lion cubs.
Monte Casino - Casino and shopping mall, with cool "outdoor" Tuscan style
Soweto Tour
Pilanesberg Safari- If you can't make it to Kruger for malaria, time or other concerns,  this is a much smaller park with less wildlife, and not as good of an experience, but definitely well worth it. About 2 hours out of Joburg, it can be done in your own vehicle, but will be a lot better with a guided game drive.
Sun City Right outside of Pilansberg
Elephant & Monkey Sanctuary- About an hour out of Joburg. Get close to elephants, touch, feed and ride them. The monkey sanctuary has a massive enclosure with hundreds of various monkeys and lemurs. No feeding or touching, unless one jumps on you. If you do go to Pilansberg, this can be done on the way.

thanks for asking!
Yes BH made it in time for early Shabbos
The drive through Lake Como/Maloja Pass (in a BMW 5series with only 500km) is beautiful, I wish I had more time for the drive.

On a side note the kosher program in Pontresina
Really exceeded all expectations. Food and service 10/10.

I'm at the early stages of trying to plan a ~10 day trip to JNB and CPT and had a few questions if anyone who's been could help answer:
1) flying from NYC, what are best/cheapest options for J or F flight? Potentially looking into CX with a stopover but open to any other options as well. Don't have many AA miles but well stocked with UR and MR. Looks like it would be 80k UR on SAA but the reviews for that airline don't seem to be the best for J or F
2) anyone gone cage diving with the great white sharks? heard it's possible in CPT and wondering about costs/experiences
3) if i'm planning on seeing CPT, JNB, and mainly interested in wild safaris, how many days minimum would I need? Not sure about victoria falls and if it would make sense to add that in. How many days would be suggested for that
4) how's the overall weather in january/february?

Thanks in advance, I look forward to doing an in-depth review of all the trip reports (although many tix seem to have been purchased during a united glitch)

JNB not more than a day, CPT you would want 4-5 days if possible...Safari 3 nights is enough.

I would add
DL J + VS/AF/KL (LHR/CDG/AMS)

Click on the quotes within the above for more options and flights. If you are looking for cheapest, book the South African flight (with ANA). It may not be the best J (there is no F), but it's lie flat and you can get there well rested on a nonstop.

If you are looking for a more luxurious J/F experience, there are options, but you are increasing your travel time by quite a bit, and if that would take away from a 10 day trip, I would argue it is not worth it.

4) how's the overall weather in january/february?

Like the rest of the year, it's awesome :-)
That's probbaly the best time to visit CPT, IINM. It's still summer, but right after South African holidays, so not overly crowded.

Having done a 10 day trip last year including Victoria Falls, I'd say if you only have 10 days you should skip the falls and focus on SA.

I was thinking of 1.5 or 2 days for the falls? Trying to figure out where I would do shabbat JNB or CPT? Potentially even HKG (for the first weekend) if I'm flying in that way

I was thinking of 1.5 or 2 days for the falls? Trying to figure out where I would do shabbat JNB or CPT? Potentially even HKG (for the first weekend) if I'm flying in that way
hkg for Shabbos is nice, but I would highly recommend JNB/CPT over hk
I really enjoyed Shabbos in both JNB and CPT
Most shul's make a Kiddush "brocha" Shabbos day.
In CPT we had a rented a great apartment off hotels.com which included housekeeping every day!(make the beds, change towles wash dishes..
Located in seapoint 2 min from checker's
A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.

you dont need more than 24 hours (the flights generally work out like that anyway)

awesome thank you. I quickly looked at your TR and will probably message you for some more details as I get a better understanding if you wouldn't mind. I'm thinking of trying to loop in victoria falls also. Better to do it on my way to SA or as I'm leaving?

I was away for 3 weeks. 1 Week was Mauritius and 2 weeks in SA and i really tried to fit in Victoria Falls as well but couldn't make it. im happy i didnt. I will get there one day but if your going to SA focus on SA not HK or Victoria Falls. there is plenty to do there. CPT is much better city than JBurg. Focus your time in CPT and on the safari. Jborg just do 1 night. PM if you want, happy to help.

Any particular Soweto Tour guides that are recommended? What about the hop on hop off bus?

Nope R1000 was just for him, keep in mind that was less than $100 for a full day of driving.
Do you still have his contact info?
