Boulders Beach
R17035 min• "I found that there were two different entrances, boardwalk and beach. The boardwalk has a higher density of penguins but if you want a better experience, I recommend visiting the beach side- especially at low tide. Because of the tide I was able to walk past the few dozen folks on the beach, climb under and over some boulders, and encounter effectively a different private beach- with penguins!!"
• For budget travelers, take the train to Simonstown and from there a cab to Boulders beach - R20.

Map of Kosher Johannesburg

NameTypeContactLocation & Description
Corner Cafe (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 440-3160 Link
Corner of Queens square and cross road in Glenhazel. Corner Café is the best place to go (or maybe the only) for kosher gluten free muffins. I’m told they’re very good. They also have great breakfasts and pastas, but I usually stick with a toasted cheese and chips.
Dee-Jays (Sandton)
Milk
+27 11 883-2265 Link
Morningview Shopping Centre, 100 South Road, 2196 - Dee-Jays provides casual dairy food that is perfect for a breakfast out with the family. Their fishballs are really good and if you need a cake in the Sandton area, they’re the place to go.
Market Cafe (Norood Mall)
Milk
Cholov Yisroel cafe
KosherWorld, Mi Vami Kosher and Chop N Wok (Glenhazel)
+27 11 440 1402 Website
1 Long Avenue, Johannesburg, 2192
Gelatisimo (Glenhazel)
Across the road from Kosher World, authentic Italian gelato. Chalav Yisroel. Absolutely fantastic.
Michelos (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 885-1500 Link
17 Northfield Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Michelos is the second best pizza restaurant. They are very centrally located (in the Jewish area of Glenhazel) and their food is nice. Never go there the night after Pesach because you’ll wait hours but most other times are good, plus they serve chalav yisrael.
Nandos Kosher (Savoy)
Meat
+27 11 885-1496 Website
553 Louis Botha Ave, Savoy, Johannesburg, 2090, South Africa - Nandos is a large chain of Portuguese chicken restaurants, but there is only one kosher Nandos in South Africa, so be aware that you can’t step into any of them! They serve top notch chicken but be sure to also try their beef burger (and order extra sauce).
Next Door "Non-CY" (Norwood)
Milk
+27 11 728-2577 Link
80 Grant Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Next Door is rated as a top restaurant in Johannesburg, kosher and not, so you know it must be pretty good. It is usually full so booking is highly recommended. While their sushi may not be top class, their pizzas certainly are and, if you’re around in Summer, definitely try their fish braai (barbeque in South African).
Pie Works (Sandringham)
+27 11 485 2447 Website
74 George Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Their pies (clearly) are the best kosher pies in the country and are perfect if you want to buy some to take home and reheat. Their burgers are delicious and the have a milk side with pizza that is really good. They’re situated on what is known as the Kosher Strip, so any Jew will be able to direct you.
RTG "Ready to Go" (Norwood)
A fast food place next door to ... Next Door. While they do offer steak and a Chinese menu, the focus is their extensive burger and hot dog menu.
The Deli Store (Sandton)
011-656-3142 / 4915  info@thedelistore.co.za, http://thedelistore.co.za/menus/main-menu/
Shop 52, (opposite Woolworths) Morning Glen Shopping Mall Cnr Bowling & Kelvin Road Gallo Manor - Reviewed in CBS's TR, as having excellent food for very low prices. According to Google is "Permanently Closed".
So Sushi (Glenhazel)
Jozi Blue (Glenhazel)

They have some items Cholov Yisroel, which they will serve on disposables on request

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - Uber
Executive Bus - Shuttle from HLA airport to anywhere in Sandton for R80 per person.
Public Bus -
Train - Gautrain from JNB airport is R135-155 depending on destination. Must purchase gold card before for R13.

Major Activities
Apartheid Museum
Flea Market
Gold Reef City - amusement park, along with other African themed attractions (tribal dancing, old "gold mine tour")
Lion Park - see lions from your car up close, pet lion cubs.
Monte Casino - Casino and shopping mall, with cool "outdoor" Tuscan style
Soweto Tour
Pilanesberg Safari- If you can't make it to Kruger for malaria, time or other concerns,  this is a much smaller park with less wildlife, and not as good of an experience, but definitely well worth it. About 2 hours out of Joburg, it can be done in your own vehicle, but will be a lot better with a guided game drive.
Sun City Right outside of Pilansberg
Elephant & Monkey Sanctuary- About an hour out of Joburg. Get close to elephants, touch, feed and ride them. The monkey sanctuary has a massive enclosure with hundreds of various monkeys and lemurs. No feeding or touching, unless one jumps on you. If you do go to Pilansberg, this can be done on the way.

While the Panoramic route is incredible (I've been a big proponent of it n this thread), I'm not sure I'd sacrifice a day in CPT for it - just because of the driving it entails. I'd go with option 2, but Sun/Mon in Kruger, and Tue-Sun in CPT.

You can do stuff in JNB on Friday - it need not be a lost day.
Amen to that last point
I'm not either sure about sacrificing a day in CPT, but i am 50/50 and if you like scenery and driving i'd may lean towards the PR
Nothing like busting down long toms pass with the views of the Drakensberg Escarpment and Lowveld

Is the reason for multiple days in Kruger to assume you will not see all on one or two drives?

Yes. Safaris are based on luck, more time = more chance to see stuff.

Took us about five hours to drive from JNB to Kruger.

If you're more risk averse (we nearly did get car jacked), you can take a bus or fly.

Regarding the PR, we'd have a baby with us. I don't know if that makes it easier or harder (I'd imagine harder), so then maybe we'd just fly.

I know we can do things in JNB on Friday (albeit in the winter). The only problem I have with option 2 is no return flights yet, though the dates are better for me.

Yikes! I'm not as risk averse, but with DW and a baby I think a 5 hour car rise may be 1) to risky for her and 2) not as easy with a baby. Also it doesn't sound like you have an opinion on option 1 vs 2, do you?

Gmaps says the drive from JNB-KNP is about 4-5 hours, though Gmaps doesn't know where in KNP I'd be going. How long does it take to drive in reality? Which point (about) on the map should I put in as a destination? I know I wouldn't fly HDS-CPT. SAA has the only non-stop which UA has for 17.5k, which seems a bit expensive.
HDS or SZK? if you stay at a fancy place they'll pick you up and take care of the game drives and everything... $$$$. Truthfully for that you;re better off in one of the Game reserves like Sabi-sabi

it's 5 hours to Skukuza (or the main gate), from there you;re own your own. Speed in the park is 50km max btw
You'd have to figure out where you;re staying first, they'd have an address you can use google maps for
why wouldn;t you fly HDS or SZKto CPT? the only other option would be to fly back thru jnb, Shame Comair (BA's local airline) and Kulula doesn;t do that area

Me too. Option 2's flights look like this:

LAX-DXB 4:45pm-7:35pm+1 (overnight in DXB) DXB-JNB 2:40 pm-8:50p. No return flights yet, though hoping for QR/ QR+EY.

Only benefit of Option 1 is all flights are available now.

The idea wasn't to spend $$$ at expensive places, though maybe that's the only reasonable option. What do people do who don't stay at those places? Do they just drive around themselves?

Wait, you;r going with a baby? have you spoken to the Dr about Malaria ?
Yeah, we'd be going with a baby, but in winter. I didn't speak to any doctors yet about Malaria, but I was under the impression you didn't need shots to see KNP. Am I way wrong there? Has anyone else here ever brought a baby to KNP?

Winter is not malaria season, but it is still a concern. You don't need shots - you need malaria pills. Though some might say you don't in that season, speak to your doctor.

Kruger can not be done with points. You book accommodation with $$. The more you spend, the better you'll get taken care of. Most basic camps will include at least a guided morning or night drive or both. The rest of the day you drive around yourself. If you stay in the luxury camps, they'll drive you around the entire time, and arrange to pick you up from the airport, etc. There are tours which will drive you from JNB, see upthread for recommendations

The benefit of the guided open-top jeep tours can not be overstated. They spot stuff you wouldn't dream of of seeing, they are treasure troves of information, the morning/night drives are at times you are not allowed to even self drive, and animals are more prevalent then.

Sorry, I've never done a paid tour. I will say the exchange rate is getting more and more favorable for tourists.

I wonder if Kruger can even be done though a UR portal. For sure  Barclays A+ will work, but I understand your point. I guess I'll speak to a doctor about traveling with a baby. I imagine I'm not the first to want to, though obviously July is way better than Apr or Dec.

So what did you do when you went, or have you never gone?

I'm from JNB - always done self drives.
