Boulders Beach

The boardwalk has a higher density of penguins but if you want a better experience, I recommend visiting the beach side- especially at low tide. Because of the tide I was able to walk past the few dozen folks on the beach, climb under and over some boulders, and encounter effectively a different private beach- with penguins!!"

Map of Kosher Johannesburg

NameTypeContactLocation & Description
Corner Cafe (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 440-3160 Link
Corner of Queens square and cross road in Glenhazel. Corner Café is the best place to go (or maybe the only) for kosher gluten free muffins. I’m told they’re very good. They also have great breakfasts and pastas, but I usually stick with a toasted cheese and chips.
Dee-Jays (Sandton)
Milk
+27 11 883-2265 Link
Morningview Shopping Centre, 100 South Road, 2196 - Dee-Jays provides casual dairy food that is perfect for a breakfast out with the family. Their fishballs are really good and if you need a cake in the Sandton area, they’re the place to go.
Market Cafe (Norood Mall)
Milk
Cholov Yisroel cafe
KosherWorld, Mi Vami Kosher and Chop N Wok (Glenhazel)
+27 11 440 1402 Website
1 Long Avenue, Johannesburg, 2192
Gelatisimo (Glenhazel)
Across the road from Kosher World, authentic Italian gelato. Chalav Yisroel. Absolutely fantastic.
Michelos (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 885-1500 Link
17 Northfield Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Michelos is the second best pizza restaurant. They are very centrally located (in the Jewish area of Glenhazel) and their food is nice. Never go there the night after Pesach because you’ll wait hours but most other times are good, plus they serve chalav yisrael.
Nandos Kosher (Savoy)
Meat
+27 11 885-1496 Website
553 Louis Botha Ave, Savoy, Johannesburg, 2090, South Africa - Nandos is a large chain of Portuguese chicken restaurants, but there is only one kosher Nandos in South Africa, so be aware that you can’t step into any of them! They serve top notch chicken but be sure to also try their beef burger (and order extra sauce).
Next Door "Non-CY" (Norwood)
Milk
+27 11 728-2577 Link
80 Grant Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Next Door is rated as a top restaurant in Johannesburg, kosher and not, so you know it must be pretty good. It is usually full so booking is highly recommended. While their sushi may not be top class, their pizzas certainly are and, if you’re around in Summer, definitely try their fish braai (barbeque in South African).
Pie Works (Sandringham)
+27 11 485 2447 Website
74 George Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Their pies (clearly) are the best kosher pies in the country and are perfect if you want to buy some to take home and reheat. Their burgers are delicious and the have a milk side with pizza that is really good. They’re situated on what is known as the Kosher Strip, so any Jew will be able to direct you.
RTG "Ready to Go" (Norwood)
A fast food place next door to ... Next Door. While they do offer steak and a Chinese menu, the focus is their extensive burger and hot dog menu.
The Deli Store (Sandton)

Shop 52, (opposite Woolworths) Morning Glen Shopping Mall Cnr Bowling & Kelvin Road Gallo Manor - Reviewed in CBS's TR, as having excellent food for very low prices. According to Google is "Permanently Closed".
So Sushi (Glenhazel)
Jozi Blue (Glenhazel)

They have some items Cholov Yisroel, which they will serve on disposables on request

Major Activities
Apartheid Museum
Flea Market
Gold Reef City - amusement park, along with other African themed attractions (tribal dancing, old "gold mine tour")
Lion Park - see lions from your car up close, pet lion cubs.
Monte Casino - Casino and shopping mall, with cool "outdoor" Tuscan style
Soweto Tour
Pilanesberg Safari- If you can't make it to Kruger for malaria, time or other concerns,  this is a much smaller park with less wildlife, and not as good of an experience, but definitely well worth it. About 2 hours out of Joburg, it can be done in your own vehicle, but will be a lot better with a guided game drive.
Sun City Right outside of Pilansberg
Elephant & Monkey Sanctuary- About an hour out of Joburg. Get close to elephants, touch, feed and ride them. The monkey sanctuary has a massive enclosure with hundreds of various monkeys and lemurs. No feeding or touching, unless one jumps on you. If you do go to Pilansberg, this can be done on the way.

Any tips for good car rental deals in JNB?

If you are waiving the insurance make sure they understand exactly what you want. Long story short, in CPT they thought when I wanted to waive insurance I meant I wanted 0% liability which ended up costing me an extra $100 when I returned the car and noticed the charges. Was very unhappy with it but lesson learned.

Ime, prices include insurance and you can't waive.

Book on the US site. Hertz don't force you to take CDW, Europcar in uMhlanga did, but in Sandton did not. In my experience.

Flying in and  out of CT and after a few days going to drive along the garden route to Port Elizabeth.  What is the kosher food availability along the way?  Do we need to bring everything from CT?  We'll be there in early July so I'm assuming the kosher restaurant and shul in Plettsburg will be closed.

Milk, cheese, bread and canned goods could be bought in most places.  Many products have the BD hechsher on them even in gas station stores, otherwise go to a Shoprite or PicknPay.
For your once a day good meal, go to checkers in Sea Point, get some ready-made meals, freeze them and take with you.  They may even have some already frozen, ask in the Kosher section.

I bought all my food in CT when I did this and stored along the way. Many shelf-stable products will be available along the way, but nothing fresh.

If you don't need mehadrin or Chalav yisrael, you can get many milk products with a BD hechsher on them nationwide.  Even bread, there are a few that are kosher just not pat yisrael.

Has anyone been to the Camps Bay Shul in Cape Town?
I am considering staying near there for Shabbos and wondering what it's like.

(I know there are a bunch of shuls in Sea Point, but there are some great villas in Camps Bay.)

FTR: I was visiting the Maharsha shul.

I walked many areas in Cape town and Johburg  not only the Jewish ones and felt completely safe. Obviously I used common sense and didn't walk in slums but on streets with regular pedestrian traffic.

Yes its possible there is crime, but no news reports? Is it really an every day occurence?

I will repeat, when I was there I asked multiple people about recent crime and none told me of major incidents.

In Lakewood there is a shooting on average once a month in the MLK/hearthstone area and most know to avoid those at night. Viggy Blech was tied, beaten and robbed on a Friday night in the heart of Lakewood. Last year there multiple robberies stealing in what would amount to almost a million dollars worth of silver gold and other valuables from multiple locations and yes brazenly mid day.

In BP  there were beatings and a bobver yungerman was killed on a Friday night many years ago and in willi thru the 90's there was major crime.

Crown heights still has a beating occasionally.

Pittsburgh had a shotting in a syngouge which I believe to be more major then most crimes in SA.

The typical USA residents response is different then those in SA and we respond differently to different types of crimes. Most Jewish areas have a shomrim and criminals know, committing crimes in certain neighborhoods will result in arrests with a tough shake down.  In SA people responded by building fences and hiring armed guards to patrol streets. The result of that kind of action is walking fenced streets with tents on corners for armed patrol.

this is one of the weakest arguments I heard in awhile. just plain wacky.

Reiterating what is in the wiki:
If you are travelling to South Africa with a child under 18, you will need to have a birth certificate for the child which includes the names of both parents as they are on the parents' passports. They are very strict about this and will not let you in without it.

Just heard of a family who wasn't being let on their flight to SA because they didn't have them. Airline finally let them on after they saw pictures of the certificates on whatsapp. Have to wait until tomorrow to see if South African immigration lets them in.
Updates to this:

https://businesstech.co.za/news/lifestyle/352937/south-africa-scraps-controversial-birth-certificate-rule/

In short, if you don't require a visa to enter, you no longer need the birth certificates / other docs for minors.

From SAA:
As you may be aware, two South African Airways unions have served SAA (“the Company”) with a notice of their intention to strike commencing on 15 November 2019. Although negotiations are continuing to try and avert the strike, the Company has taken a decision to suspend all operations on 15 and 16 November 2019. Your flight MAY be affected, but we are here to help you.

These cancellations only affect flights operated by SAA. All flights operated on partner airlines (Mango, SA Express, Airlink and all codeshare partners) will not be affected.

Don’t panic, we are here to help you. Kindly send us a private message on Facebook so that we can either rebook your flight or issue a full ticket refund (including taxes).

Thinking of October/November for seemingly the best time for Devil's Pool, Safari, etc.

I think I'd probably arrive CPT on Monday evening and depart CPT the following Thursday evening, so 10 nights to play with.

How would y'all recommend breaking that time down?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

It'll be tight to get in Victoria falls, the question is how much you want to run around and if you should just skip.

From what I’m told the most overrated is jnb although the food is pretty good.

The kosher winery in cpt  can Def be skipped.

Thinking of October/November for seemingly the best time for Devil's Pool, Safari, etc.

I think I'd probably arrive CPT on Monday evening and depart CPT the following Thursday evening, so 10 nights to play with.

How would y'all recommend breaking that time down?
Wouldn't the South Africa thread be a more appropriate place for this discussion? Also, are you going to Joburg at all?
