Boulders Beach
R17035 min• "I found that there were two different entrances, boardwalk and beach. The boardwalk has a higher density of penguins but if you want a better experience, I recommend visiting the beach side- especially at low tide. Because of the tide I was able to walk past the few dozen folks on the beach, climb under and over some boulders, and encounter effectively a different private beach- with penguins!!"
• For budget travelers, take the train to Simonstown and from there a cab to Boulders beach - R20.

Map of Kosher Johannesburg

NameTypeContactLocation & Description
Corner Cafe (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 440-3160 Link
Corner of Queens square and cross road in Glenhazel. Corner Café is the best place to go (or maybe the only) for kosher gluten free muffins. I’m told they’re very good. They also have great breakfasts and pastas, but I usually stick with a toasted cheese and chips.
Dee-Jays (Sandton)
Milk
+27 11 883-2265 Link
Morningview Shopping Centre, 100 South Road, 2196 - Dee-Jays provides casual dairy food that is perfect for a breakfast out with the family. Their fishballs are really good and if you need a cake in the Sandton area, they’re the place to go.
Market Cafe (Norood Mall)
Milk
Cholov Yisroel cafe
KosherWorld, Mi Vami Kosher and Chop N Wok (Glenhazel)
+27 11 440 1402 Website
1 Long Avenue, Johannesburg, 2192
Gelatisimo (Glenhazel)
Across the road from Kosher World, authentic Italian gelato. Chalav Yisroel. Absolutely fantastic.
Michelos (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 885-1500 Link
17 Northfield Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Michelos is the second best pizza restaurant. They are very centrally located (in the Jewish area of Glenhazel) and their food is nice. Never go there the night after Pesach because you’ll wait hours but most other times are good, plus they serve chalav yisrael.
Nandos Kosher (Savoy)
Meat
+27 11 885-1496 Website
553 Louis Botha Ave, Savoy, Johannesburg, 2090, South Africa - Nandos is a large chain of Portuguese chicken restaurants, but there is only one kosher Nandos in South Africa, so be aware that you can’t step into any of them! They serve top notch chicken but be sure to also try their beef burger (and order extra sauce).
Next Door "Non-CY" (Norwood)
Milk
+27 11 728-2577 Link
80 Grant Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Next Door is rated as a top restaurant in Johannesburg, kosher and not, so you know it must be pretty good. It is usually full so booking is highly recommended. While their sushi may not be top class, their pizzas certainly are and, if you’re around in Summer, definitely try their fish braai (barbeque in South African).
Pie Works (Sandringham)
+27 11 485 2447 Website
74 George Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Their pies (clearly) are the best kosher pies in the country and are perfect if you want to buy some to take home and reheat. Their burgers are delicious and the have a milk side with pizza that is really good. They’re situated on what is known as the Kosher Strip, so any Jew will be able to direct you.
RTG "Ready to Go" (Norwood)
A fast food place next door to ... Next Door. While they do offer steak and a Chinese menu, the focus is their extensive burger and hot dog menu.
The Deli Store (Sandton)
011-656-3142 / 4915  info@thedelistore.co.za, http://thedelistore.co.za/menus/main-menu/
Shop 52, (opposite Woolworths) Morning Glen Shopping Mall Cnr Bowling & Kelvin Road Gallo Manor - Reviewed in CBS's TR, as having excellent food for very low prices. According to Google is "Permanently Closed".
So Sushi (Glenhazel)
Jozi Blue (Glenhazel)
Milk
They have some items Cholov Yisroel, which they will serve on disposables on request

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - Uber
Executive Bus - Shuttle from HLA airport to anywhere in Sandton for R80 per person.
Public Bus -
Train - Gautrain from JNB airport is R135-155 depending on destination. Must purchase gold card before for R13.

Major Activities
Apartheid Museum
Flea Market
Gold Reef City - amusement park, along with other African themed attractions (tribal dancing, old "gold mine tour")
Lion Park - see lions from your car up close, pet lion cubs.
Monte Casino - Casino and shopping mall, with cool "outdoor" Tuscan style
Soweto Tour
Pilanesberg Safari- If you can't make it to Kruger for malaria, time or other concerns,  this is a much smaller park with less wildlife, and not as good of an experience, but definitely well worth it. About 2 hours out of Joburg, it can be done in your own vehicle, but will be a lot better with a guided game drive.
Sun City Right outside of Pilansberg
Elephant & Monkey Sanctuary- About an hour out of Joburg. Get close to elephants, touch, feed and ride them. The monkey sanctuary has a massive enclosure with hundreds of various monkeys and lemurs. No feeding or touching, unless one jumps on you. If you do go to Pilansberg, this can be done on the way.

Biltong to USA? packaged maybe but even that i dont think i allowed , i've had friends get it taken away though, YMMV
Last flight i was on they stopped everyone from the SA flight at customs
they took one look at our pile of suitcases and said "ag man, voetsek" (in english)

You can't bring it in no matter how it is packaged. It's not uncommon for customs agents (in JFK at least) to specifically ask about biltong. A relative had a dog sniff out the biltong in his bag, and he pulled out a baby bottle and said it must be sniffing the milk and got it through  ;D

You are correct. Dried meat is also a problem.

Dried fruit, however, IS allowed.

Kosher food in Johannesburg that would deliver food to the airport lounge

Also Looking for kosher shabbos food delivered to my hotel in cape town

Uber eats has worked for me to get deliveries at JNB airport but only to the land-side

CPT shabbat deliver Goldies (as mentioned before) and Avrons do Shabbat packages - check out their FB pages.
Avrons and the Press (co owned by Goldies, 2 shops down the road) do deliveries all over CPT - contact them directly.
However monitor their social media as the lockdown rules are forever changing.
Also as mentioned before, if you can, go to Checkers or Spar in Sea Point - they have lots of take out all day, every day

The One and Only hotel in CPT is great, located in the V&A waterfront however, far from any shul.
Due to the virus, many shuls are closed or only having quick outdoor minyanim -  also forever changing
I actually like the President Hotel in Bantry Bay (end of Sea Point) walking distance to Chabbad - 20 mins - 5 mins to Spar for food. Sea Point beaches are rocky, your closest are Clifton and Camps Bay - Altantic Ocean=cold. Warmer are Muizenberg - Indian Ocean. HOWEVER all beaches are currently closed.

The best biltong variety of Biltong (cuts, wet/dry, spices etc.) is at Moishes Butchery in Fairmount, Joburg - must be vacuum packed for travel.
You can also get it in Pick n Pay, Checkers (CPT and JNB) with Kosher butcheries.

Another tip is the QuickShop (Engen Glenhazel Service Station, 21 Northfield Ave, Glenhazel, Johannesburg, 2192, South Africa) - they have Kosher pies in the refrigerator, biltong packs, kosher (and some Israeli) snacks, crackers etc. - open 24/7 - diagonally across from Ohr Sameach

Stayed there once, location is good for shabbat but noise from Main Road and tiny rooms = no thanks. Corner rooms have "partial sea view"

I once double booked 2 hotels. For 1 night might be a good trade off vs walking.
Also many APT's available via bookings.com.
Always praying for delayed baggage.

Any reviews on the Westin, Hyatt or the One & Only hotels in Cape Town?

Is Cape Town considered safe to walk around in? Like from Westin to Kosher Restaurants?

Or the Marriott Sea Point?

If you're talking about the Protea Sea Point- I would classify it at the very best, as a 2* hotel. The ONLY benefit is that it is right next to all the restaurants, shul, checkers. Otherwise it was a pretty bad hotel in my experience. Also the water pressure in all of Cape Town is abysmal so be prepared for that lol.

I was advised not to venture around too much at night at Cape Town so we stuck to the main road when going to/from dinner.

That's a pretty big benefit, especially when bookable with Marriott certs. Are the rooms clean? What was bad about it?
Are there better options close to those things?

Off the top of my head, I remember the rooms were small but fairly clean. It is definitely a dated hotel. The attention to detail just wasn't up to par IMO, for example a couple of towels in my room had holes in them. From what I remember that was the best points option close to restaurants and shul but that was 2 years ago at this point.

All in all, since you'll be going out for meals often and you can also walk to Checkers to buy a lot of kosher food it's probably your best bet. Just better to go into it with the right expectations.

Are there better paid options nearby?

Sorry can't help you there. You'd have to ask a local. If you're not planning on spending much time in the hotel, just book it and forget about it.

That's a pretty big benefit, especially when bookable with Marriott certs. Are the rooms clean? What was bad about it?
Are there better options close to those things?
We loved the Protea Sea Point. No, it wasn't the PH Tokyo or even the Andaz Maui, but it was clean, nice and the location was perfect. We didn't feel like it was old, falling apart, disgusting, etc.

Or the Marriott Sea Point?
I had a very positive experience and stay there about 3 years ago. The hotel is a solid 3 star in my opinion. We did get upgraded to the Jr suite for a few nights and the top suite for the other nights.
The staff was extremely nice and helpful for trip planning and shabbos.
Solid option, nothing that'll blow you away but the location is second to none in cpt.

Not disagreeing on location, that is definitely where it shines. But I think it makes sense to have realistic expectations when going into it. That was my main point

I would come classify it as a solid stay.
The impression I got from you is a more slum like Stay which I think is not correct.

Radisson? may be a drop better
Look into some of the boutique hotels (i have no recommendations)
if you aren;t tied down to Sea Point
there is the Gardens neighborhood on the other side of the Table Mtn
there is the Belmond Mt Nelson a short walk from Cafe Riteve and the Gardens Shul (not sure if any of it is open) 15 on Orange is A Marriott Property
I believe Yehoshua talked about this above
Shlep to get to Sea point from there though

ETA was Cdlaz, Joe4007 and mijo
