Boulders Beach
R17035 min• "I found that there were two different entrances, boardwalk and beach. The boardwalk has a higher density of penguins but if you want a better experience, I recommend visiting the beach side- especially at low tide. Because of the tide I was able to walk past the few dozen folks on the beach, climb under and over some boulders, and encounter effectively a different private beach- with penguins!!"
• For budget travelers, take the train to Simonstown and from there a cab to Boulders beach - R20.

Map of Kosher Johannesburg

NameTypeContactLocation & Description
Corner Cafe (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 440-3160 Link
Corner of Queens square and cross road in Glenhazel. Corner Café is the best place to go (or maybe the only) for kosher gluten free muffins. I’m told they’re very good. They also have great breakfasts and pastas, but I usually stick with a toasted cheese and chips.
Dee-Jays (Sandton)
Milk
+27 11 883-2265 Link
Morningview Shopping Centre, 100 South Road, 2196 - Dee-Jays provides casual dairy food that is perfect for a breakfast out with the family. Their fishballs are really good and if you need a cake in the Sandton area, they’re the place to go.
Market Cafe (Norood Mall)
Milk
Cholov Yisroel cafe
KosherWorld, Mi Vami Kosher and Chop N Wok (Glenhazel)
+27 11 440 1402 Website
1 Long Avenue, Johannesburg, 2192
Gelatisimo (Glenhazel)
Across the road from Kosher World, authentic Italian gelato. Chalav Yisroel. Absolutely fantastic.
Michelos (Glenhazel)
Milk
+27 11 885-1500 Link
17 Northfield Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Michelos is the second best pizza restaurant. They are very centrally located (in the Jewish area of Glenhazel) and their food is nice. Never go there the night after Pesach because you’ll wait hours but most other times are good, plus they serve chalav yisrael.
Nandos Kosher (Savoy)
Meat
+27 11 885-1496 Website
553 Louis Botha Ave, Savoy, Johannesburg, 2090, South Africa - Nandos is a large chain of Portuguese chicken restaurants, but there is only one kosher Nandos in South Africa, so be aware that you can’t step into any of them! They serve top notch chicken but be sure to also try their beef burger (and order extra sauce).
Next Door "Non-CY" (Norwood)
Milk
+27 11 728-2577 Link
80 Grant Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Next Door is rated as a top restaurant in Johannesburg, kosher and not, so you know it must be pretty good. It is usually full so booking is highly recommended. While their sushi may not be top class, their pizzas certainly are and, if you’re around in Summer, definitely try their fish braai (barbeque in South African).
Pie Works (Sandringham)
+27 11 485 2447 Website
74 George Ave, Johannesburg, 2192 - Their pies (clearly) are the best kosher pies in the country and are perfect if you want to buy some to take home and reheat. Their burgers are delicious and the have a milk side with pizza that is really good. They’re situated on what is known as the Kosher Strip, so any Jew will be able to direct you.
RTG "Ready to Go" (Norwood)
A fast food place next door to ... Next Door. While they do offer steak and a Chinese menu, the focus is their extensive burger and hot dog menu.
The Deli Store (Sandton)
011-656-3142 / 4915  info@thedelistore.co.za, http://thedelistore.co.za/menus/main-menu/
Shop 52, (opposite Woolworths) Morning Glen Shopping Mall Cnr Bowling & Kelvin Road Gallo Manor - Reviewed in CBS's TR, as having excellent food for very low prices. According to Google is "Permanently Closed".
So Sushi (Glenhazel)
Jozi Blue (Glenhazel)

They have some items Cholov Yisroel, which they will serve on disposables on request

Airport Transfer Options
Cab - Uber
Executive Bus - Shuttle from HLA airport to anywhere in Sandton for R80 per person.
Public Bus -
Train - Gautrain from JNB airport is R135-155 depending on destination. Must purchase gold card before for R13.

Major Activities
Apartheid Museum
Flea Market
Gold Reef City - amusement park, along with other African themed attractions (tribal dancing, old "gold mine tour")
Lion Park - see lions from your car up close, pet lion cubs.
Monte Casino - Casino and shopping mall, with cool "outdoor" Tuscan style
Soweto Tour
Pilanesberg Safari- If you can't make it to Kruger for malaria, time or other concerns,  this is a much smaller park with less wildlife, and not as good of an experience, but definitely well worth it. About 2 hours out of Joburg, it can be done in your own vehicle, but will be a lot better with a guided game drive.
Sun City Right outside of Pilansberg
Elephant & Monkey Sanctuary- About an hour out of Joburg. Get close to elephants, touch, feed and ride them. The monkey sanctuary has a massive enclosure with hundreds of various monkeys and lemurs. No feeding or touching, unless one jumps on you. If you do go to Pilansberg, this can be done on the way.

i am curious what your shabbat plans are for Cape Town?
Here is my 2 cents: This itinerary has too many moving parts for a TIA(this is Africa) trip.
I would skip the paragliding - if I recall its $100 and lasts about 4 minutes.
Take Bonine even if its a clear day. People were puking on the way to Robben Island.
make sure the shark diving is worth doing. I hear that the sharks have left for some reason
Devils Pools are only available during certain periods of the year - not sure when you're going.
If the weather is poor in cape town, go visit the kosher wineries - which you should be doing anyway. Its beautiful.

Option 1:
BLZ-JNB-VFA
JNB layover 11a-11a
- Longer layover
- $70 cheaper
- Gotta wake up at 3am
- Single connection

Option 2:
LLW-HRE-JNB-VFA
JNB layover 4p-11a
- Shorter layover
- $70 more
- Can wake up at 4
- 2 connections

Neither option has award availability.

Thoughts? Anything to do in JNB other than eat, which would make the longer layover more worthwhile?

Of course the LLW-APL-NBO-LVI option (which allows me to wake up at 8, gives me four more hours in LVI/VFA, andgives me two new airport codes instead of one, is $300-400 more >:(. Anti-Semites.

EDIT: apparently if I break up the segments they're all available on FB. Might be worth calling tomorrow see if I can get an agent to book it.

There is. Depending on your interests, touring soweto, and such activities.

Lion Park, monkey and elephant sanctuaries - hey aren't safaris, but they do give you a hands on experience with the animals.

Not necessarily things I'd fly in for, but if you are there already, there are things to do.

Dunno, sounds like an extra hour of sleep beats all of those ;D

Good ideas though, appreciate it. The elephant sanctuary sounds really cool.

Of course the LLW-APL-NBO-LVI option

that's about the most backward (or Fishy) way to get from point A to point B

No hotels near Jewish area. Check airbnb for Glenhazel. Or do what Dan did and stay in a hotel a short drive away.

So this is booked.

Any suggestion on where to stay near food? We'd have lunch, dinner, and brbreakfasif places are open early enough.
The Thai food at NextDoor and RTG was outstanding and unique.

Ribs, dirty fries, wings, and onion rings are B&B were laughably cheap and delicious.

Breakfast at Hey Barista was great. Fantastic pancakes a la mode for $1.50 and great lattes.

Nandos has delicious cheap fast food, loved the chicken burger and the spicy wedges are legit crack.

Gelatissimo had some of the best ice cream I've ever tried. Affogato drink is also amazing.

Biltong and deli at Moishie's was amazing and crazy cheap! Could have easily brought it back to the US, they just waived us right through without a word. Can also buy breads, pitas, wraps, and other grocery items there.

Pies from Pie Works were fantastic and just stupid, stupid cheap, they double wrapped them and worked out perfectly for reheating in VFA.

Kosher World, Pick N Pay, and Checkers have endless kosher candy and snacks that my kids are in heaven with. The Simba chips and fritos and are amazing, but don't miss Flings!

JNB has nothing to do and is ugly as sin, but man can you eat well there! We ate quarter portions and went to multiple places for some meals just to try them all out as we had the time to kill there anyway and the food is so cheap.

Glad it worked out! If price wasn't a factor, how would you rank JNB as a kosher food destination?

That's one way it reminded me of GRU. Delicious cheap kosher food options, but otherwise an ugly city with practically nothing worth doing aside from eating. Add in one of the world's worst airports, load shedding for no power in many places, no streetlights, no traffic lights, no water, and cops pulling us over for a bribe, and it's a special kind of ********.

Vs. pretty much any other city in the world with kosher food that has several things worth doing.

But the food in JNB holds its own against anywhere in the world. And the price makes it one of the best food spots I've been to and makes it a worthy destination as an extended connection point. Thanks to everyone's help here with the suggestions!

CPT OTOH is just glorious. I don't understand why more people from JNB haven't made their way to CPT.
And Press has fantastic food and awesome drinks to boot!
