Full Body Scanners
« on: November 11, 2010, 09:12:19 PM »
So what is the real answer?
On one hand:
1. The scanners seem to provide very graphic detail of the body.
2. The radiation may be dangerous- there is no longitudinal evidence of its safety.
3. The "opt-out" approach sounds very intrusive.

On the other hand:
We do want safe air travel.

The answer is simple, if you want to fly you have to abide by TSA rules no matter what you feel.
For know they are kind enough to offer 2 options, although most will consider it a lose lose situation...

So far I've been lucky and there's always been the option for the metal detectors.

But I'll go for the grope before allowing myself to get radiation poisoning.

I only wonder, if this is even effective.  Do you think that terrorists are going to give up, or will they find other ways to try to harm us.  Don't you think they are laughing reading about what is going on, realizing that without even trying they are wreaking havoc in our country.

If someone wants to cause harm they still can.
Unless they're doing a cavity search, there's still plenty of space for someone to stick something...

Of course what the terrorists really want is to disrupt our daily life, so in that regard they've been quite successful.

In Israel they have trained agents that can sniff out a terrorist from a mile away.  In the US we have $6/hour morons which is why we have to go through the whole security charade that will have an agent grope a 3 year old girl and waive a suspicious looking adult right through.

Nice article. Though, I've read it (or variations of it) more times than I can count.

Here is a article you guys might like http://www.thestar.com/iphone/news/world/article/744199---israelification-high-security-little-bother
Great article. I recently flew to Israel. At EWR and BRU they inspected our cooler with milk for my baby and made us put the stroller on the conveyor belt.
At TLV my baby was sleeping in the stroller. They let me wheel the stroller through the beeping metal detector and ignored the cooler.
I was surprised at first because Ben Gurion is supposed to have good security-then I realized that all the other airports are just wasting their time going through motions when Ben Gurion is concentrating only on the people that need to be scrutized!

FINALLY — A great alternative to body scanners at airports. .  The Israelis are developing an airport security device that eliminates the privacy concerns that come with full-body scanners at the airports. It’s a booth you can step into

that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on  you. They see this as a win-win for everyone, with none of this crap about

racial profiling. It also would eliminate the costs of a long and expensive trial.  Justice would be swift. Case closed! You're in the airport terminal and

you hear a muffled explosion. Shortly thereafter an announcement comes over the PA system . . . "Attention standby passengers — we now have a seat available on

flight number XXXX. Shalom!" Hats off to the Israelis!

and which people would that be? arabs? in other words, another timothy mcveigh would easily be able to walk on to an airplane?

Not necessarily. All of those "dumb questions" that they ask are meant to see if the person is nervous or lying. This is the most famous example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindawi_Affair

Read the article that Shmiel linked. Its not just 'Arab' profiling its just tuning into psychological nuances.  It happens to be that 99.99% of people who blow up planes are arabs, so theyre not too far off....

she apparently had no clue. they couldnt  have figured out she had a bomb from nervousness or lying then.

i dont think the israeli model can be implemented anywhere else. can we agree that most passengers going through tlv are jewish and wont blow up the plane? their workload as far as detecting unusual patterns etc is only for a minority of the passengers going thru.
