Can I still save expired/expiring AVIOS?

Got notified a couple of weeks ago that my 11,348 BA Avios were set to expire 3/17 (Shushan Purim). On the site though they're still showing up. Also, my wife who has the same number of points got no such notification though the points are for the same flight to Israel 3 years ago.  Does the fact that we both still have our points mean we are in the clear? Or should/can we still do something to prevent their expiring? (Though with 3 babies in the house I don't know when we're going to be flying any time soon.)  Please advise.

Book a 4.5K flight and then cancel it a day later for a $2.50 fee?

If I transfer some BA avios to Iberia will that extend the expiration of the leftover BA? Or are they somehow considered one big account?
