As promised, here is my report.

I flew these guys this morning from Manchester to Brussels.

My general impressions were that a) I did not see them "busting" people for having luggage that was a few inches oversized. I opted to pay a slightly lesser (but still quite steep) charge in advance to check my bags because they were oversized... but then I saw people getting on the plane with bags the same size as mine; b) waiting to check the bags was an extra half hour in line; c) the overhead bin size is rather large, at least on the plane I flew.

Bottom line: next time I would definitely just try to bring my bags on board and risk having to pay the higher fee.
which airline? RyanAir or EasyJet?

It's a low-cost, but quite okay.
Flew them with kids.

What is the best search engine for low cost tickets?

IMHO skyscanner is best.

Strict overweight/oversize enforcement, with high fees. Bad customer service.

nothing is free, only a hand bag. You must pay to check in.

You can check in months in advance with them.
