Albany NY
« on: April 09, 2014, 07:35:22 PM »
We're planning on going to Albany this coming chal hamoed. I know there's not a whole lot to do there, but I think we'll have enough to do there for 1 day.

Any suggestions and/or info would be greatly appreciated.

Why Albany? Where will you be for yomtov?

Home. We have this 'minhag' for the past couple of chal hamoeds to visit a city within a few hours driving range and this year with only one day available (I'd like to be home for Shabos) I figured Albany would be a good choice.

If you're thinking something else, bring it on.

Just so this thread has some content...

We ended up going on Thursday night to avoid driving both ways on Friday. I got a hotel room on priceline (Name your own price -  $50 ($65 after tax) for a Clarion Inn) in the outskirts.

We started with Cohoes Falls as it was close to our hotel. IIRC, it's the largest waterfall in the NY area after Niagra. We couldn't find a good viewpoint so we only spent a few minutes there.

Then we drove about 15 minutes to Empire State Plaza where most of the attractions are located. There's parking available as you enter the plaza for $2 per hour.

There's an underground concourse leading to all buildings in the plaza so you don't have to go outdoors. We started with the observation deck on the corning tower. It's a 40 + story building - probably tallest building in the area - with views of Albany and the Hudson River.

We continued to the NYS museum. And then to the NYS Capitol, where we had a tour of approximately an hour. I was really impressed with the Capitol, as it's a really magnificent building.

Best of all, they're all free admission.

Just noticed this thread. There is a bus that becomes a boat, called aqauaduck, and it takes you throughout the city with a guide on board. A lot of fun for children.

Shul-
CBAJ (cbaj.org) - Mordern Orthodox
Shomrei Toraj ("Shteibel") - Chabad-like

Both have daily Minyan. CBAJ has early weekday, and Shomrei Torah has at 8:15AM. Both have shabbos.

Kosher-
Terra is OK, expensive but classy.

There's also a Pricechopper market with a deli/bakery and seating area.

Albany has an Eruv.

I went for weekends once a month for 2 years.

Just for the record, I was researching attractions around Albany area and the aquaduck portion of these trolleys closed down. They no longer go into the water.  :(

There's kosher food in the Price Chopper in Colonie (2 mi away).

The main shul is CBAJ and I don't believe they are open. There's also the Shteeble (http://www.albanyminyan.com/), but their website says closed to visitors.
