A New Era for Chase Annual Fees?
« on: April 15, 2014, 12:05:20 PM »
I'm in the middle of working on an AOR.  Surprisingly, I didn't have to close any of my Chase business cards to get 3 new ones opened (more on that in an upcoming post in the AOR thread).  As I just got socked with the annual fee for one of my Ink Plus cards, I called for a retention bonus.  I got the standard "Spend $5k in 3 months and get 10k bonus points".  I told her I'd think about it.  She mentioned I had plenty of time to think about it "since you can get a full refund of the annual fee within 180 days".

Come again?

The phone rep said the policy just changed a few days ago.  I didn't believe her so I HUCA'd.  A 2nd rep told me 60 days which was more believable.  I told rep #2 what rep #1 told me, and he said "Oh yes, sir, a refund is automatic in 60 days but can be manually applied within 180 days."  I'm now starting to believe reps #1 and #2.  I called rep #3 and had the same conversation as I did with rep #2.  Reps #2 and #3 confirmed this is for both business and personal cards.  I sent an SM and am waiting for a response just to have it in writing.

Well played, Chase.  Looks like I'm going to spend $5k more on this card and keep it around a little while longer.

May be correct.  Just sent a SM yesterday on a couple personal asking what the deadline was for me to be able to cancel and get the annual fee back.  I noticed the weird remark that if I did x or y within 60 days I'd receive an "automatic" reversal.  I guess I now know "automatic" may not just a misplaced word choice from some Indian CSR!

I would think it's a waste of 5K. Churn it and get 50K for your 5K.

was about to cancel card w/in 60 days to avoid AF, but REP told me to hold a little while longer because it became 6 months. to which i replied, "great ill hold a little while longer". to which he anyway offered me an additional 5,000 AVOIS to offset the $95 fee on BA card. SWEET, but ill prob still cancel it tomorrow anyway. 8)

I had a similar experience with my United club card. I was offered 15k additional miles as retention and the rep expressly told me that the policy had recently changed allowing 6 months

Interesting...I just got hit with my AF on my SW and UMPE, I was waiting for the 6k anniversary points to post from my SW card, but now you're saying I've got more time before I have to worry about it. That also means more time for me to call for retention bonuses on these cards (not that I expect to get one on the SW because of the anniversary points).

Not sure what you mean by confirm. Multiple ppl here have mentioned that Chase reps confirmed this for them via phone. Seems legit.

Yes phone rep told me chase gives you 6 months to cancel and get back annual fee :)  She said within 60 is automatic; after 60 days done manually

Here is their response today for a business card I cancelled after 60 days

Thank you for contacting Chase requesting to waive the
annual fee assessed to your account.

As you requested, your account was closed on February 16,
2015. Your refund for the $95.00 annual fee will
automatically post to your account within one to two
billing cycles.

Thank you for providing me the opportunity to assist you
today. If you have any further questions, please reply
using the Secure Message Center.

Thank you,
