If you buy 20k, it works out to 2.6 cents per point; if you transfer those 20k into 25k airline miles, it works out to 2.1 cents per mile. Not the greatest value, admittedly, but it's a great way to top off an existing account (especially AA, where you can't use someone else's SPG account); also, it's perfectly clean (as opposed to trying to buy from someone and transfer from their account to yours).

also, would you get 3x points for that purchase if you buy with a SPG cc that's a plat status?  (i.e. $525 purchase = additional 1575 spg points?)

Nope.

You never get 3X with CC spending with plat, only on actual stays.

Plus, you wouldn't even get 2X since it's processed by points.com

ok -- However, SPG gives 3x cc points on spa fees, massage, and other SPG/Starwoood/"W" purchases, etc..

Incorrect. SPG Amex gives double points on purchases from a Starwood merchant. Zehu. Any further bonus is earned when you settle a hotel bill, regardless of what CC you use, depending on what your SPG status is during the stay.
