Ductless Air Conditioning
« on: April 24, 2014, 03:11:21 AM »
Since I was so blown away by the expertise that came forth on that "noisy basement" thread, I want to ask for help on what to look for when putting in ductless A/C. My house is old. I can't put in hvac without it costing k25. I want to use the mini-split systems that I have seen in use. Where do you get them? How do you put them in? What should I know.

I want to put them in on my first floor where I have three areas: my living room, dining room and kitchen.

If it works well, then maybe next summer I will do the bedrooms on the second floor.

We have a fijutsi unit. This is what I know.
A. They are not so cheap.
B. They are supposedly much cheaper to run
C. The are pretty quite
D. They take more time to cool or heat a room from start.
E. The thermostats are so complicated, can really be a pain to set.

I think you need it installed by an hvac technician

We looked into it last year.  The cost for installation and the units for just 2 rooms would have been about 7k.  If anyone finds a good deal on installation and the units in the NYC area please let me know.

I don't remember the pricing but we redid our house a year and a half ago and got split units WITH ducts. It's almost like having central. For two floors we have four units (four thermostats). What a difference from the old in the wall/window ac units! May not be too cheap to install and I haven't used it except for a year and a half of summers, but it was well worth it to us. Yes, an AC company did the install. We also had walls and ceilings open. To me they seem to be much cheaper to run. As far as setting the thermostat, we have it running the whole time. We were told it's cheaper than starting and stopping all day. Difficult? Why? They are not pretty quiet. They are totally quiet. The big units are outside in the back. Overall they are great. Tomorrow I'm having a guy come to estimate our basement rooms. Whether to go with in wall or splits, but with those units in each room you see nowadays. Since we only use the basement for guests when they come occasionally we might go with the in wall units. We'll see. Good luck

Difficult?
Still can't figure out how to set the 7 day timer so the unit will shut at night. Had it for over a year. The two tenants couldn't do it either.

Yes , I've read and studied the manual. Maybe I didn't apply myself enough.:-[:-\

Ductless mini-splits would be a good choice as you can have as many as four indoor air handling units connected to one outdoor unit and if you want you can also add the units. But, generally, which air conditioning to install, totally depends on the structure of your house. As you say, your house is old, you can also go for traditional centralized air conditioning as it would help in cooling all the rooms. Though, consult some air conditioning technicians who can suggest you better after seeing your home.

Ventis may not be available, but any economizer does the same thing.
