Of course your "home" country cannot deny you entry (even without docs). However they can hold you up for hours or days (without proper docs). Eventually they'll have to let you in. Like a witness or some other sorts, but that's not the "norm".

For the record I will explain.

You started needing a passport to enter the USA, but not Canada. But because you can't come back to the USA only with a passport, the general rule is that don't travel without a passport because you won't be able to come back to the USA.

Now, because OP has a GE card, so coming back is no issue as GE cards are an acceptable method of entering a USA land border, OP has no problems traveling to/from Canada. Just have your birth certificate ready for citizenship proof.

(source that entering to Canada does not require a passport)

http://cbsa.gc.ca/security-securite/admiss-eng.html

Where is your source that GE is acceptable? Nowhere have I seen that written. Kicking myself for not getting a Nexus to begin with.
I don't mind having to go through and deal with coming back with just a license and GE card but I am driving with a bunch others and I don't want to cause them all trouble and waiting late at night coming back into the US.

Idk about a more current thread but the CBSA website
says that a US citizen can drive into canada with a Nexus card:

Identification requirements for United States citizens and permanent residents, and international visitors:

....Citizens of the U.S. who are members of the NEXUS program may present their membership card as proof of identification and as a document that denotes citizenship, when arriving by air (when coming from the U.S.), land, or marine modes.

Citizens of the U.S. who are members of the FAST program may use their cards as proof of identity when arriving by land and marine modes only.

Permanent residents of the U.S. who are members of the NEXUS or FAST programs must travel with a passport and proof of permanent residence, and may be asked to present these documents to the officer upon arrival at the border.

Permanent residents of the U.S. who are members of NEXUS also need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) when flying to or transiting through Canada. Citizens of the U.S. and Canada are exempted.

I assume global entry will help for this as well. but what about re-entry into the US?

I wouldn't assume that global entry works as well.

For re-entry, I've heard successful reports of entering by car with an expired US passport (one report of a passport that had been expired for a few years already).

Found this this thread and this one..
https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=28681.0

Any recent news with one traveling just with a license as he forgot his passport? Going into Canada?
Going back he can find someone to bring his passport.

Obviously doesn't hurt to try, but probably should get a copy of his passport and BC?
