Kemach yoshon
« on: April 27, 2014, 10:46:07 AM »
In honor of parshas Emor, the current parsha:

Quote
"Until the day that you bring this sacrifice to your G-d, you may not eat bread, roasted grain or fresh grain. This shall be an eternal law for all generations, in all your dwelling places." (Vayikra 23:15)

I am not careful in yoshon and I don't plan to be. I could explain, and I think I will explain, but first, can we get a nice exciting DDF debate going? Anyone have any cool stories about yoshon? Interesting vertelach? Come at me, guys!

I said in my original post that I would explain. But yes, I don't see it as a heter. I wouldn't brag about being meikil. I will explain b"n why some are davka not careful. Please first just take me at my word that I am not trying to promote kalus, ch"v. It's a shita, and I will explain it. But first, I want to hear from those who DO keep it, what are some cool reasons or insights.

Cool reasons?! You serious?
How about that most reshonim and acharonim are not meikil at all!

Without knowing you, I'm impressed with your dvaikus and rosh yashar time and time again.
That's why your view is now a surprise for most.
In America bichlal it really isn't so much of a problem as it is in E-Y.  People just assume it is what one does to be machmir anywhere in the world.

I know for some circles that yoshon is as much a badge of frumkeit as not touching the beard is for other circles. I am not trying to incite a panic by yelling "chodosh" in a crowded theater. I know it's important to you to be machmir. I am asking for some lachluchis, a vort, a story, that brings out the inyan. You know, like we all agree that we put on tefillin because it's a mitzvas esei midoraisa, but I can still have cool vertelech about tefillin, no?

I know it's a surprise for many. Thank you for your compliments. It's humbling to hear such things. Like I said, I am not bragging about a kulah here. Not that I brag about my chumras either  ;)

As already been mentioned Lubavitch isn't makpid
Exactly.
Additionally, it's not even on the radar as being 'extra careful'.

On a completely different note in Chabad, would be the meticulous adherence of: Chassidishe Schita, Cholov Yisroel/"212", and no beard trimming/cutting.

IME, Yoshon is not even in the "pros or cons" list when comparing items on a shelf.

I know it's a surprise for many.
I grew up believing people who kept yoshon were correctly keeping a difficult mitzvah.
I later learned that this is only a necessary chumrah in some places, not all (I'm sure someone will CMIIW).
I think Freddie is relishing to share this not commonly known information.

Something like - "I missed MH 370 because I keep yoshon - I forgot my bread by security.  By the time I got back, they had closed the gate..."

The story is told about how in the mid 1970's the proprietor of a kosher bakery in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood was asked if his products were Yoshon. Not realizing that this Hebrew word, which literally means 'old', actually refers to grain which had been planted before Passover, proudly, albeit naively, answered. "I can assure you that everything in my bakery is 100 percent fresh."

Quote
In Chabad literature[edit]
Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi -the author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch HaRav- quotes the basic opinion of Chadash being forbidden Midioraita[3] and after considering the leniency of Rabbi Yoel Sirkis writes that -even for wheat harvested from a non-Jewish field- a "Baal Nefesh" (lit. an "owner of soul") should be scrupulous and not rely on lenient Rabbinic opinions.[4] Similarly, In a responsa of Rabbi Schneur Zalman, he notes that in generations prior to his the custom was to take the lenient approach (i.e. rely on Rabbi Sirkes's leniency) but in his generation many have assumed the stringency of not consuming Chadash.[5]
Rabbi Schneur Zalman's son, the Mitteler Rebbe explains in a Maamor the important aspect of the Kohen bringing the Omer offering on the Mizbeach (from Barley -usually used as Feed) and only then is the consumption of Wheat (usually reserved for Human consumption) permitted.[6]
From the writing of his followers, it has recently been published that Rabbi Sholom Dovber Schneersohn -the Fifth Chabad Rebbe- was scrupulous in refraining from Chadash products when he attended a Siyyum of Yeshivah Students.[7]
